191 Grand StreetHusband-and-wife duo Xian Zhang and Yiming Wang who brought you the Michelin-starred Cafe China launched this Sichuan-focused eatery in 2017, specializing in everything from spicy noodles to house-made dim sum to braised whole fish in chili oil. At Birds of a Feather, Wang is the interior designer behind the sleek, modern space which features wooden booths and vintage-inspired light fixtures along with a small bar area.

Birds of a Feather, from the same brilliant team behind Cafe China, has been a popular Sichuan destination since opening in 2017. Its mapo tofu is the best in the borough and the spicy soft shell crab, Chungking spicy chicken, and spicy cumin lamb are excellent, too. Less hot options are available as well, like the braised or steamed whole fish and duck dishes.

The Spicy Fish Fillet and the Mustard Green Fried Rice are my personal favorites from Birds of a Feather and I order from BoaF at least once every week. The veggies- string beans with pork and snow pea shoots- are cooked to perfection. I have also really enjoyed the accordion eggplant and the rice pudding. All of these dishes are recommended! ". The ingredients are wonderfully fresh, consistent high quality across all dishes, wonderful textures and especially characteristic--the authentic tasting and outstandingly fresh tasting herbs. If you haven't eaten kikurage/wood ear mushrooms before definitely try the Wood’s Ears with Pickled Peppers and Cucumber 泡椒木耳刺瓜 , the Pork Dumplings in Chili Oil 红油水饺 were also fantastic.
