Reviews Summary

Balthazar is widely praised for its authentic Parisian brasserie atmosphere and consistently delicious classic French fare, especially its brunch offerings and pastries. While many rave about the superb food and outstanding service, some find the waiters to be busy and in a hurry, and note that the quality has occasionally declined over the years. Despite potential waits and noise, most agree the experience is worth it.

"Absolutely loved it here!

We’ve wanted to try this spot for awhile; I’m so glad we were able to come for dinner. We didn’t have reservations, showed up at 4:40 and they told us to come back at 5:00 pm, because that’s when they begin seating for dinner.

I ordered an iced tea, steak frites, mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. Everything was delicious and very fresh.

There was plenty to share and the sides we ordered were for the table.

I’ll definitely be back again soon to order the steak again. It was the best steak I’ve gotten in the city; it was juicy and hot. I loved it.

We want to come back for brunch too; their breakfast options looked great too.

There is also a pastry shop next door where you can order drinks and snacks. There was plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.

I’ll definitely be back again soon."

Colette Hebert

"This place is a great restaurant. The atmosphere really reflects a parisian Bistro. The food is very good. I gave a neutral stars rating for the service, not because it was bad, but because the waiters were very busy so they were kinda in a hurry to take our order and it took them a while to check on us to see if we needed anything else, on and off the menu. Anyways, I really recommend to have lunch or dinner there, preferably not at the peak hours and you'll probably a 5 star experience"

"✨ A little slice of Paris in the heart of New York!

We walked into Balthazar on a rainy day without a reservation — and somehow got lucky with a table outside. The drizzle only added to the charm and made the experience unforgettable.

The portions are generous, the flavors divine. Every dish felt carefully prepared, fresh, and satisfying. The atmosphere was buzzing, yet cozy — and the service was fast, warm, and attentive.

Perfect spot for a delicious lunch with that unmistakable French touch.

Highly recommend booking in advance — we were lucky, but this place fills up for a reason."

Best French restaurants in NYC from Le Bernardin to Le Rock

Once you cross the doors of Balthazar, the bustle of New York fades away, replaced by the ease of Paris. The only indication you may have that you haven’t completely been transported to the epicenter of France is the rotating buzz of people clamoring for tables—a constant since its 1997 opening. But once you’ve secured a coveted space, hopefully near the bespoke bar that climbs to the ceiling, let the staff take care of you with glasses of Bordeaux, towers of seafood and bites of crusty bread swiped in butter, sauce and drippings from the whole chicken.

Keith McNally's flagship restaurant—this is also the master behind such atmospheric Manhattan mainstays as Pastis, Minetta Tavern, and Morandi (and the Odeon, which ex-wife and ex-business partner Lynn Wagenknecht got in the divorce and runs to perfection to this day), each also worth a visit if I may suggest a “Keith McNally crawl”—is a high-ceilinged, brasserie-inspired scene to end all scenes. Martinis are omnipresent at the bar and in deep red-leather booths. So are steak frites smothered in peppercorn sauce.

Avenue's Guide to the Best French Restaurants in NYC

Since bursting on the New York food scene with the opening of the cocktail-centered Odeon and the French brasserie Pastis in the early 1980s, British-born restauranteur Keith McNally has his pulse on what’s next in the city that never sleeps. And his current portfolio of eateries, including Balthazar, which reopened in late March after a yearlong pandemic-related slumber, shows he is still at the top of his game. With a charming 102 seats for outdoor dining, the famed brasserie is once again attracting the beautiful people who have clamored for its comfort food comestibles, including its bubbly Gruyère-topped French onion soup gratinée — voted among the best in the city — which head chef Shane McBride serves up at a rate of 15 gallons a day.

The best restaurants in New York for first-timers

In a city that changes in a New York minute (sorry, I had to), there are few spots which earn the title as a ‘classic joint’ – especially one as ‘scene-y’ as Balthazar. The crown jewel of the New York brunch world, the all-day restaurant slings out a combination of French and American-esque dishes, from eggs Benedict to duck confit (and one Franco-American fusion: a New York strip steak ‘ au poivre’). Helmed by the infamous restauranteur Keith McKnally, whose Notting Hill house was featured in H&G back in 2019, the restaurant certainly has spirit – and a star-studded list of faithful regulars, from Anna Wintour to Sienna Miller (just don't ask about James Corden).
