Reviews Summary

Turkey and the Wolf is widely praised for its inventive and incredibly flavorful sandwiches, with the fried bologna and collard green melt being standout favorites. The quirky and fun atmosphere enhances the dining experience. While service is generally prompt, be prepared for potential lines due to its popularity.

"Visited this spot while in NOLA for a gaming tournament. It was recommend by a local so I had to try it. The bologna sandwich was by far the best sandwich I’ve had from any restaurant. Highly recommend! The fries were good as well…they were nothing to write home about but as a side they paired well with the sandwich. I had to wait about 25 minutes in the line to order but well worth it!"

Andrew S.

"We had the collard greens melt, the vegan chicken sandwich, crinkle fries, and the cabbage salad. Everything was DELICIOUS!! Super flavorful and unique. If you’re a meat lover, you won’t miss the meat on the collard greens melt or the vegan chicken sandwich. I loved the ingredients and texture of the cabbage salad - it had a nice kick too. It has a funky and fun atmosphere - loved it!"

John T

"This place lives up to the hype. The sandwiches are unreal. The ingredients are fresh, innovative and seem like they are locally sourced.

I had the ham sandwich with two-year aged cheddar, a cranberry mayo and lettuce on a Virginian bread. It was great! The fries were seafood style and had great crunch and salt, but definitely could benefit from more sauce options. The only options are ketchup packets and dukes mayo.

The drinks were a surprise for me. They were quite delicious. I had the daily special which was a banana daiquiri. It was so refreshing and really tasted like raw banana.

I absolutely recommend to everyone that you should try having lunch here while you are in NOLA!"

New Orleans Food Bucket List: Most Essential Places to Eat & Food to Try

Irish ChannelMason Hereford and company created something magical when they opened Turkey and the Wolf in 2016, bringing fuss-free whimsy and fun to the local lunch hour. Undoubtedly on the leading edge of 80s and 90s cultural appreciation, the casual Irish Channel corner joint has remained true to its roots despite the national acclaim it’s received over the years. For example, the restaurant could easily handle a dinner service, but leadership has avoided expanding hours, instead opting for a more typical work schedule for its staff.

The 25 Best Restaurants In New Orleans - New Orleans

Turkey & The Wolf has received more national attention than any other restaurant in New Orleans over the last couple of years. Which makes sense, since their wild sandwiches are all truly excellent. But while it’s no longer the newest kid on the block (they’ve since opened a breakfast spot called Molly’s Rise And Shine, a gastropub called Hungry Eyes, and a meat-and-three called Hot Stuff), this is still one of the best casual, comfort food spots around.

Turkey and the Wolf will probably remind you of your go-to dive bar from back in the day. It’s still one of the city’s buzziest restaurants after opening in 2017 with a single sandwich; Chef Mason Hereford is famous for his twists on childhood comfort meals, which means there’s always a line out the door—and sometimes wrapping around the block. The Lower Garden District hot spot sits on a residential street and serves up sandwiches, but they definitely aren’t boring lunch box classics.

The cool and quirky Turkey and the Wolf, from chef Mason Hereford, was recently named the No. 1 restaurant in America by Bon Appétit. Located in the Irish Channel, the cozy corner storefront with chrome tables adheres to a simple premise. First, there are sandwiches with all types of fillings: fried bologna, chicken-fried steak, and even a collard-green melt on rye bread (don’t look for traditional po’boys).

The one place atop my list that we failed to hit was retro sandwich superstar Turkey and the Wolf, but we may have done one better by prioritizing its sister breakfast restaurant, Molly’s Rise and Shine. The ’80s decor is memory-stoking extensive, and the fast-food-esque sandwiches satisfy on all fronts. Throw in a Southeast Asian–leaning puffed rice salad and a celery soda to start your day on top.
