Reviews Summary

Cochon Butcher is celebrated for its exceptional house-cured meats, outstanding sandwiches like the Muffuletta and Le Pig Mac, and delicious sides such as mac and cheese. The friendly service and fun, pork-themed atmosphere contribute to a highly positive dining experience. While most reviews are glowing, some diners have noted the restaurant can be quite noisy during peak hours.

"Words cannot describe how amazing the food is here! MK was the bomb in helping us decide what all we wanted. I was craving a Muffuletta and was blown away how delicious it truly was! The sausages are beyond mouth-watering and an absolute must have. To end the meal on an even higher note, their Key Lime pie was over the top and the best I have ever had. Hands down one of my new favorites in New Orleans!"

Bryan Moody

"Our friends highly recommended this place and it did not disappoint! We had the daily special of red beans and rice with fried pork shop. Wow…..possibly the best meal I had this trip?! We also loved its proximity to the WWII Museum. The servers were so sweet and enthusiastic. The only thing I’d change is the size of the tables so we could fit more food and beers!"

Rebecca Hooper

"I'm way overdue on this review, but as usual, I'm thinking about this place as I do regularly from 319 miles west. Originally went next door to refuel after a few hours at the Super Bowl Experience, but they were pretty full up with media, so we decided to try the Butcher. I am so glad we did. I'm a muffluletta fiend and have never finished a whole one in one sitting, but when I tell you I could not stop going to town on this one, I mean it. I miss that muffuletta at least once a week. The meats were so fresh, the bread was so fluffy and perfectly toasted... it was transcendent. My partner got the Saturday special fried chicken, and the flavor on that was gorgeous too.

Service was awesome despite the initially busy crowd, and the patio was a great spot for watching various NFL jerseys go by (and getting the occasional "WHO DAT" since we were in full Saints gear). Really nice, chill place to enjoy phenomenal food, a whiskey, and a local brew. I'm making a beeline for Cochon Butcher the next time I'm "back home.""

The Best Muffulettas in New Orleans

When chef Donald Link opened this butcher shop/cafe as a companion to his full-service restaurant Cochon, there was never any doubt that a muffuletta would appear on the menu (alongside his unstoppable pork burger, Le Pig Mac). The version found here is genuinely one of the finest in the city, in large part due to the fact that all of their meats are cured in-house -- not to mention the house-made olive salad. The muffuletta here is considerably more modest in size than at other spots, which is either a good or bad thing, depending on your perspective -- but you can definitely devour a whole one of these all by your yourself.

Where To Find The Perfect Muffuletta In New Orleans

Designed as a butcher shop, a wine bar and a sandwich counter, Cochon Butcher is a multitasker, specializing in house made meats, terrines and sausages. Chef Donald Link’s artisanal warehouse eatery, located in the city’s Lower Garden District, makes one of New Orleans’ best muffuletta sandwiches: the Cochon Muffuletta. The Italian-inspired sub is made of sesame seed flat loaf – browned and crisp at the bottom, of course – layered house-cured meats (mortadella at the base, then capicola, and salami on top), and topped with the house-made olive salad.

Around the corner from its big brother Cochon, Butcher packs its own Cajun punch with an upscale sandwich menu that dials up the flavor on local classics. With house-cured meats and olive salad, the muffuletta reveals exactly how delicious Italian-Creole can be, though the pork-belly sandwich, with refreshing mint and cucumber, also brings customers back. In addition to sandwiches, there are meaty small plates and a rotating selection of wines, beers, and well-made cocktails.

Cochon, on Tchoupitoulas Street, is run by another Cajun chef, Donald Link, and was among the first to brave the Warehouse District 10 years ago, when it was still distinctly edgy. Now the area is alive with restaurants and art galleries. Cochon is a hectic place that attracts long queues but it’s worth it for the crab starter with coriander and hints of chilli ($14), or the pork with cabbage, given a surprise fillip by pickled turnips ($24).

The chatty, boisterous nature of the restaurant is apparent when you enter: The glee of meat-happy patrons practically bounces off the wood paneling that frames the entire dining room. It’s a place to pig out (pun intended), but behind the bacchanal is a commitment to high-quality, in-house food production. The menu is understandably pork-heavy, with house-made sausage and bacon.

Swine is fine at Cochon, where chef Stephen Stryjewski (partnered here with chef Donald Link) pays homage to the old-style Cajun Boucherie with the hand crafting of boudin, andouille, smoked bacon, and head cheese. With newly appointed chef de cuisine Bret Macris in the kitchen, a menu of locally sourced pork, fresh produce and seafood, delivers authentic flavors of Cajun country. Set in the rustic, yet the contemporary interior of a renovated New Orleans warehouse, Cochon is the place to tuck into a succulent crawfish pie and roasted gulf fish "fisherman" style, along with comfort foods including spoon bread with okra and tomatoes, roasted oysters and suckling pig.

Cochon Butcher has for the last decade or more offered the Elvis King Cake, filled with peanut butter and roasted bananas, topped with roasted marshmallows, tricolored sprinkles, and house cured bacon, made from Mississippi and Louisiana raised pork. It was invented by Rhonda Ruckmann a former employee in homage to Elvis’ favorite sandwich, the peanut butter nanner sandwich, when he realized Elvis’ birthday was on January 8, only 2 days after Ephiphany and the opening of New Orleans King Cake Season. Instead of the plastic baby, the Elvis is stuffed with a plastic squealing pig – classy!
