What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Diners rave about Atchafalaya's creative Creole cuisine, particularly its standout brunch offerings and attentive service. The ambiance is consistently praised for being warm and inviting. While many highlight dishes like shrimp and grits and duck hash, a few mention minor dessert preferences.
"This beautiful little bistro in the garden district was worth the trip for us. Slightly off the beaten path on Magazine Street, Atchafalaya has an exciting and tight menu. We came for a light late lunch and decided to order the seasonal items rather than go with main menu options. The quiche was light, the salmon BLT was good and the gumbo was exactly what I was looking for. I’d definitely like to come back and try this place for a dinner sometime."

"A wonderful dining experience! Our host was very accommodating and welcoming. Our server, Harold, was friendly and did an excellent job at making us feel at home.
My husband and I ordered the fried oysters, a cup of their gumbo, the gulf fish, and the shrimp and grits. We even made room for their bread pudding. Everything was delicious! P.S. - If you are not consuming alcohol, they also provide you with a mocktail menu."

"Sooo lovely! We had Sunday brunch here and thoroughly enjoyed it. There was a jazz trio playing music, the wait staff were very nice, and the food was great. The deviled eggs were outstanding, as was the breakfast risotto. Charming little spot in the Garden District, and they accept reservations."

12 Best Brunches in New Orleans
Eleven different spirits—including house-infused cucumber gin and a vibrant roasted garlic and herb vodka—are available as part of Atchafalaya’s infamous Bloody Mary bar, setting the stage for a raucous atmosphere in NOLA's Irish Channel neighborhood every morning from Thursday through Monday. The iconic cocktail also makes a guest appearance in the Fried Gulf Oyster Benedict, braising some greens alongside cornbread stuffing, poached eggs, and a brown butter hollandaise. Contemporary riffs on New Orleans classics are kind of the rule here, actually, right down to such remarkable appetizers as a strawberry and satsuma salad with arugula, black quinoa, and a balsamic mint dressing; fried green tomatoes with buttered Louisiana crab, and baby greens; and a rich duck and andouille gumbo prepared with buttered popcorn rice.
The Best Brunch Spots In New Orleans
Atchafalaya was first opened in 1924 under the name Petrossi’s Restaurant, but in the 1980’s, well-known restaurateur Iler Pope reintroduced the space as Cafe Atchafalaya. Pope’s new restaurant was among the first to put a modern spin on traditional New Orleans cuisine. Today, the restaurant’s name has been shortened to Atchafalaya and the brunch menu continues to push boundaries with ingredients like boudin, popcorn crawfish and creole hollandaise.
17 Spots for the Best Brunch in New Orleans
Atchafalaya Restaurant, housed inside a small Creole cottage in a residential Uptown neighborhood, is easy to overlook—but the bold menu says otherwise. The fried green tomatoes, cream cheese grits, and hickory smoked bacon are a great place to start, but the rest of the menu takes it up a notch (the duck hash with poached egg, chicken and andouille gumbo, and chicken and waffles are all great options).
Restaurants in New Orleans
Even with reservations, expect to wait for weekend brunch at this Uptown institution, but your taste buds will thank you later. Locals tend to linger over sultry Creole creations like étouffée omelets and house-made sausage, a DIY Bloody Mary bar, and jumping live jazz on Saturday and Sunday. At dinner, the food is just as delicious, but the vibe is more romantic.

19 Best Restaurants For Brunch In New Orleans
Atchafalaya's humble exterior belies the sophisticated yet homey cooking that awaits diners inside this Irish Channel gem. The building has been around for nearly a century, and the restaurant has undergone as many eras as Taylor Swift, but it wasn't until current owners Rachel Jaffe and Tony Tocco took over in 2008 that it became what it is today: An upscale, yet approachable venue with elegant takes on rustic New Orleanian cuisine. Atchafalaya is open for brunch and dinner throughout the week (be sure to check the hours, as it's closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays), and while the restaurant's dinners are fantastic, brunch is a total showstopper.
Garden District's Best Lunch: Restaurants in New Orleans
Lunch is called brunch at Atchafalaya, a Thursday through Monday 10am - 2:30pm great idea thanks to chef Jacob Cureton's inventive take on contemporary creole cuisine. Touted as New Orleans' only "five A" restaurant, this funky neighborhood bistro bristles with a distinct New Orleans vibe that attracts locals and tourists alike. Besides eggs all kinds of ways, the afternoon menu might include specialties like Low Country Benedict: poached eggs atop a red bean and rice cake served with collard greens, alligator sausage, gumbo gravy and pickled peppers.
