A spot at No. 4 doesn’t mean they’ve slipped; it means the others have stepped up. Krause’s is still the city’s most vibrant, most well-stocked German biergarten, with live music, a Saturday farmers market and a menu of German standards that reminds us this place started as a German diner back in 1938. The late Ron Snider and his family restored and reinvigorated the place in 2017, and chef Jeremy “Boomer” Acuña turns out breakfast, lunch and dinner, including a German variation on chicken-fried steak called Texas schnitzel with fork-tender pork and jalapeño gravy, along with a restorative sausage plate with roasted potatoes, housemade sauerkraut and braised red cabbage.

My favorites are: The River House, Gruene River Grill, The Gruene Door, Infernos, Mozies, and Cantina Del Rio(for their chips, salsa, and margaritas. Those are all in Gruene. For BBQ, I like Blacks. For burgers and casual food, I like Freiheit Country Store and Lone Star Float House on River Road. Downtown, I like Muck-n-Fuss, The Phoenix Saloon, McAdoos, Huisache(pronounced Wee-satch), Krauses, 188 South, and The Downtowner. Favorite places for beer are Guadalupe Brewing, Five Stones Brewing, and Krauses. For wine, I like The Grapevine, and Dry Comal Creek Winery.

There is history here at one of the top restaurants in New Braunfels. Located in the heart of town and originally “Gene’s Place” from 1938, but in 1959, Kermit Krause bought it from his dad, and it’s been going ever since, though at first as a saloon known for beer, dominoes, and card games. It’s evolved over time into a staple gathering place with an outdoor Biergarten with live music on weekends for family and friends, serving German classics and Texan favorites, some of the best food in New Braunfels.

Krause’s Biergarten & Cafe was recently renovated back into the lives of the Hill Country folk earlier this year and has continued to serve up the best beers and food around. Ron Snider has taken on the responsibility of reopening the iconic place that Gene Krause opened in 1938, and once again carries on the atmosphere of open conversation, good food, good times, and (of course) great beer. Before we hit the tap wall, the food here is unbelievably good.

If you are in town on a Saturday, this is our go-to brunch spot because the parking lot also hosts the amazing New Braunfels Farmers Market from 9-1.

Nestled in the heart of New Braunfels, Krause's Cafe is a reuben sandwich paradise. I emerged from the Comal starving and headed to Krause’s Biergaten & Cafe to quiet my growling stomach. Originally opened in 1938, this icon of the New Braunfels dining scene is now back after a 20-year hiatus. I opted to sit in the giant bierhalle where I devoured a crisp jägerschnitzel and washed it down with a frosty German beverage.

With live music and authentic German cuisine and located near downtown New Braunfels, Krause’s Biergarten is a destination in and of itself. Recently modernized, Krause’s has been a New Braunfels tradition since 1938. Krause’s also serves breakfast and has a gluten-free menu as well as a fun kids’ menu.

If you are looking to grab a beer and enjoy a bit of German food with a Texas flair, look no further than Krause’s Cafe. The restaurant initially opened in 1938 and was a popular establishment in the town for years. Unfortunately, the original owners had to close the restaurant in the 1990s.

German classics and Texan favorites are what’s on the menu at this popular downtown restaurant. The large, open biergarten is great for large groups and to let kids run around a bit. Live music is a big draw to this eatery, as is the beverage menu and even some healthy options on the menu!
