Reviews Summary

Fat Mama's Tamales is celebrated for its festive atmosphere, friendly service, and notably, its delicious tamales and 'Knock-You-Naked' margaritas. While many rave about the fresh flavors and unique dishes like the Gringo Pie, a few diners found some menu items lacking and noted the staff's occasional loudness impacting the dining experience.

"Stopped by for a quick lunch. The tamales are so good! Maybe the best I’ve ever had? Def the most meat. We got six tamales and the fire n ice pickles and it was perfect to split- if you have the willpower. I went with the recommended blended mango and strawberry marg and it was PERFECT on a hot day. We had to get a dessert and went with the caramel cheesecake since the key lime pie was out. Omg - so good."

Louisa S

"Mama doesn't know how to cook. The service and atmosphere were great. But the food was lacking. We had tacos, tamales, and bondin. The tacos were almost passable, but everything else was yuck. Sorry for the review, but Mama doesn't know how to cook."

Nancy J

"My two tacos were tasty. The knock-you-naked margarita didn’t. Not sure why they check ID. A person cannot stay long to chat with friends with the staff screaming non stop."

Some must-tries include: Biscuits & Blues, which helps perpetuate Natchez’ reputation as biscuit capital of the world; Roux 61, a local favorite that serves up notoriously-huge portions of its delicious fare; Fat Mama’s Tamales, which is a rite of passage in Natchez; and Mammy’s Cupboard, where the desserts are legendary, especially pies in a variety of flavors topped with mile-high meringue (you won’t go wrong with a slice of my favorite, coconut cream pie).

What to Do in Natchez

Natchez’s most iconic restaurant is Fat Mama’s Tamales, so for lunch we had to see what all the fuss is about, particularly the “Knock-You-Naked” margaritas. If you’ve never had Mississippi tamales, you’re in for a treat; they’re one of this region’s culinary specialties, and they don’t get any better than Fat Mama’s. We opted to sit inside, but like most restaurants in Natchez, Fat Mama’s also has patio seating.

We tried her Gringo Pie, which is something well-known in these parts of the South in Alabama and Mississippi. It’s a heaping bowl of tamales covered in chile and sprinkled with cheddar cheese and jalapenos. We also got their sweet and spicy “fire and ice” pickles, which were a bit sweeter than spicy, though they were good.
