When Angéle opened on the banks of the Napa River more than 10 years ago, it was a brave move, considering there was very little in the way of foot traffic in Downtown at that time. (The river even still flooded from time to time.) Napa has completely changed, but the relaxing local vibe and the quality of the rustic, French country-inspired cuisine has not. Hunker down in the former boat house for roasted quail or duck confit and a negroni on a rainy winter night — or, in sunnier weather, grab a table on the deck and a enjoy a bottle of Provence-style rosé and a dozen oysters while overlooking the river (which, thankfully, no longer floods).

Napa has quite a few squint-and-you-could-be-in-Europe kinds of wineries and restaurants, like Angèle, which gets high marks. They re-create a French countryside setting by the waterfront—complete with a vibrant yellow facade, greenery for privacy, and umbrellas—without going overboard. The more traditional-leaning French menu complements the space, highlighting dishes like escargot and boeuf bourguignon, along with Americanized favorites like a hot dog baked in puff pastry and served with cornichons.

A Napa staple on the river, Angèle is housed in a turn-of-the-century ship chandlery. The cozy dining room and sunny, covered patio make for a relaxing setting to fill up on French onion soup, steak tartare or a Croque Monsieur sandwich with a glass of wine.

On the pricier side, but you’ll be treated with deliciously authentic French dishes. Always get dessert here, always. And be sure to order an espresso martini – some of the best in town.

Angéle (Napa) is a quaint riverfront Provencal style restaurant that offers traditional French food including onion soup, delicious salads and a lobster and shrimp boudin sausage.

And with every good bistro, you know there’s a great burger!. We really loved sitting on the patio and drinking Rose all afternoon here. Their mac is a winner as well.

If you are craving Italian food, you can visit Bistro Don Giovanni. They also have French food, and the ambiance gives you that warm, rustic Italian vibe.
