In the last month we have had lunch at La Bicyclette twice, Peppers in Pacific Grove, Rocky Point twice, Village Corner 'cos we had the dog, and Little Napoli. All were good, but Rocky Point is my favorite. When the weather is great as it has been for the past month, sitting outside at Rocky Point and having a great burger is the best lunch I can think of.

Any morning of the year, you can expect a handful of locals at Village Corner, newspapers open and coffee set alongside a basket of freshly baked croissants. We recommend joining them for your morning meal–grab a patio seat if you’d like to people-watch while dining on banana pecan pancakes or a roasted veggie omelette. Lunch and dinner are served, too.

Village Corner Bistro: Breakfast basics are upgraded with atypical items like chicken mango link sausage and Black Forest smoked ham, griddle treats like Grand Marnier French toast and robust omelets, including the Diablo with chorizo, jalapeno, onions and pepper jack. In 1976, the restaurant was threatened with a loss of their lease as the owners of the building had other plans for the property. Frustrated and angered over the possibility of losing their cherished restaurant local Carmelites sprang into action and formed a group called Old Carmel. Concerned with the proliferation of tourism in Carmel, this organization established themselves as a powerful political movement of 300 residents and through their actions were able to save the Village Corner from eviction.

What I loved most about this classic Carmel cafe, aside from its wonderful outdoor patio space, is how local and welcoming it feels. Village Corner is a Carmel institution that serves fresh and local products, including artichokes and calamari from a few mere miles away (so delicious!) If you’re vegetarian, gluten-free, or committed to sustainability, they’re incredibly accommodating for all three. Fantastic lunch spot (to best enjoy the patio.)

Things do change at this longstanding kitchen, but not too much. They still know a good old short stack from a full stack. And they can serve up a reuben that tastes of Brooklyn next to Monterey sand dabs.
