Early June is a particularly good time to experience it all, as it brings the weeklong Carmel-by-the-Sea Culinary Week, which offers tasting events, curated menus, and special offers at more than 30 participating restaurants.

La Bicyclette is owned by the same people as Casanova, and while they also serve rustic, Mediterranean-inspired food, this place is known for their thin crust, wood-fired pizzas. On the food tour, we learned that La Bicyclette sources a majority of their ingredients (did I hear 90%?) from within just 10 miles of the restaurant. On this last visit, we tried their local wild mushroom pizza and the prosciutto, seasonal squash and arugula pizza, a tasty and colorful combination.

Local ingredients meet Old World simplicity at this daylong restaurant with a menu rotating weekly. The wood-oven pizzas are an obvious choice at any time of day—special varieties might include mixed mushrooms with thyme and truffle oil or roasted squash and speck—but there are also classic Mediterranean-style salads, oysters in harissa butter sauce, and plats du jour including a couple of pastas, a fish a la plancha, and steak with frites. Weekends bring a lovely breakfast.

I have, however, enjoyed several fabulous lattes, which, along with those at La Bicyclette, are the best in Carmel. They also make a top notch London Fog, though they don’t call it that way, and I order as an Earl Grey tea latte with vanilla syrup. I have also enjoyed one of their desserts, and a glorious brioche with vanilla custard – which is a favorite, and I pick one up whenever I find one, miraculously left there just for me from the morning breakfast rush.

At La Bicyclette, the tour was whisked to a table in front of the restaurant’s custom-built wood-fire brick oven, where everything on the sustainable menu is cooked. As the tour dined on a ham-and-cheese pizza, Perkins explained that there is no freezer at La Bicyclette on purpose, so the kitchen obtains its ingredients locally, from farmers, fishermen and the organic garden at the Carmel Middle School, and changes its menu daily.
