Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy a lovely sit-down meal at those other good restaurants, but when I need to stay focused on work, and just can’t deal with yet another same-same blah meal from the Whole Foods buffet bar – which is not cheap, by the way – I prefer to get something to go, usually enough to last me a couple of days. That is where Carmel Belle has become my “savior”, and not just because their food is so fresh and good, but because everything there is organic, and they do not use – or even own – a microwave!!!!!. Do you have any idea how many kudos they get just for this last thing?

This bustling culinary destination, almost resembling a market, is known for sourcing its ingredients from farmers and purveyors that practice sustainability, and provide honest, high-quality products that taste really good. Carmel Belle’s meats are hormone-free, grass-fed/free-range and humanely raised right here in California, whilst produce is largely organic and purchased from local farmers’ markets, farmers, and/or distributors that support small farms. Only naturally, no pun intended, they offer visitors locally roasted organic coffee and Clover organic milk and cream.

Carmel Belle serves up classic California cuisine in a farmhouse setting, and it’s a wonderful place to grab a light lunch before shopping or exploring for the day. This is definitely a more casual, order-at-the-counter type spot located inside a mini shopping area with other boutiques, but their designated sitting area is super cozy and one of those places you want to grab a book and hang at for awhile. Most of the produce used is completely organic and locally sourced, and all of the meat is humanely raised and hormone-free.

If you’re looking for lots of choices for a yummy Carmel-by-the-Sea breakfast or lunch made with organic, locally farmed products, Carmel Belle will suit you well. There are tons of coffees, teas, freshly made juices, and smoothies. You can get your avocado toast here, of course, but there’s also a Truffled Egg Toast w/ melted Fontina (I love Italian cheeses!), an Italian-inflected Green Eggs & Ham, and a Creamy Brie Toasted Baguette that will also vie for your attention—as will dozens of other toasts and breakfast sandwiches.

You'll find the finest fashion, jewelry, antiques, and home decor boutiques this side of the Riviera or St. Moritz. Everything trendy or classic is here to explore in the village's secret passageways, hidden courtyards, or curlicue-roofed shops.

Don’t let the tucked-away location in a shopping center deter you; Carmel Belle is hidden but worth the hunt. We say go for a farm-to-table style breakfast that’s big on cooking with local ingredients and serving consistently healthy yet filling. The espresso drinks and smoothies are always solid choices (try the Johnny Cashew or the Sunrise Smoothie!), but we go for the Roasted Mushroom Melt or the Green Eggs and Ham.

Chicago friends just back from Carmel raved about Grasing’s Coastal Cuisine, Cafe Rustica in Carmel Valley and Carmel Belle. Carmel Belle, as a locals hangout, has exceptional breakfasts and a great lunch menu of salads, soups and sandwiches. They also liked The Inn at Spanish Bay for drinks where bagpipers play on the outdoor terrace at sunset!

For one night, our ramen deficit will be defeated, and we will be free from ramen served at sushi spots, or from waiting for star pastry chef Yulanda Santos’ next ramen session at Carmel Belle. For the most part, on vacation, I like my breakfasts to be light, quick and easy. I don’t want to be bloated or tired while exploring or spend too much time waiting to be served/pay, etc. when I could be exploring. Carmel Belle is exactly what I look for in a breakfast spot.

La Bicicleta: This Carmel bistro came highly recommended to us. It’s super charming, and what I’d picture as an ideal date spot. There’s no kid’s menu, but there are pizzas on the menu, so you’re not totally out of luck if you bring kids with you.
