Alvarado Street Brewery also has locations in Carmel and Salinas, but their Monterey outpost is the original, pouring a bunch of craft beer that pairs perfectly with a lineup of bar food. Taps rotate frequently, but they specialize in ales and sours, like strawberry-banana sour ale or tropical-flavored hazy IPA. Post up in the cozy beer garden out back and order some quesabirria tacos, poutine, loco moco, or fish and chips.

This one’s a triple win, as these three outposts of the community institution all share Great American Beer Fest medal-winning beer, elevated pub eats, and dog enthusiasm. Moving west to east: At Carmel’s ASB Bistro, a large patio occupies the bottom floor of well-appointed Carmel Plaza, the “pup patty” is popular with the whiskered population, and five different dogs joined the scene on a recent weekday lunch, where Howl-oween fashion shows have also taken place; at downtown Monterey’s beer garden space, almost as many dogs as humans frequently laze and graze among the picnic tables out back; and at Salinas’ production space/tap room, the airy working brewery loves your best friend (and rotating food trucks) almost as much as you do.

Conceived of, designed by, and managed by retired architect John Hill, the Alvarado Street Brewery & Grill features an elegant design with both modern and vintage touches. The open kitchen shows off the chef's skills (they were cooking artichokes when we visited, and they smelled delicious!) Large, stainless steel brewing tanks, visible through the glass-walled bar area, are stunning and give diners a great peek into the brewing process. By the way, those brews are piped straight from the tanks to the taps, so your beer avoids contact with oxygen until the moment it hits your glass.

The single biggest coup of the wider downtown Monterey renaissance—one of the best local storylines of the 2010s—was this reinvention of the former State theater into a gorgeous space with stellar beer, soaring ceilings and better-than-expected food. Service can be iffy, but man the Great American Beer Fest medal-worthy beers make everything OK. The addition of a patio, beer garden, Salinas satellite production spot/tasting room/beer garden and mixed-fermentation sister spot East of Eden in Carmel all score points, and make this so much more than a brewery.

Downtown's Alvarado Street Brewery (426 Alvarado St.) has more than 30 rotating taps, several beers brewed on site, and an outdoor beer garden. // Opened last summer, Dust Bowl Brewing Company's (290 Figueroa St.) Monterey taproom is open for distanced outdoor seating and pickup. But damned if the food isn't quite good as well. For the past few years, we have had a very positive connection with Alvarado St. Brewery out of Monterey and Salinas, CA.
