Now that traveling with your own bike has become ridiculously expensive, renting makes sense. It seems like there's a bike shop every block in Moab -- it's a Mecca for off-road enthusiasts -- but making reservations in advance is a good idea. For about $60/day at Poison Spider Bicycles, I found top-flight Yeti bikes with 5.75 inches of travel (mountain bike-speak for the range in the suspension), and super helpful mechanics/cyclists who provided helmets and the right pedals (bring your own shoes).

Moab is known as a mountain biking Mecca, and experienced riders won’t want to miss the Magnificent 7, or “Mag 7,” which includes 45-plus miles of intermediate/advanced singletrack just outside of town in the Gemini Bridges Road area. You can link up the trails for an epic 21-mile point-to-point ride, or opt to take on various sections of the trail separately. Whichever route you choose, you’ll be treated to wavy slickrock, epic views and technical ledgy riding with big descents.

For my 40th birthday celebration, we started the evening with a couple of beers at the Moab Brewery with friends. The brewery only had a handful of beers on draft and the amber keg went dry before we could order a second round. It was the only brewery in town but overall we didn’t think the beer was special.

Sunset Grill up on the hillside is good with a great view of the Moab valley (take sunglasses because it faces west). Out along the Colorado River (about 14 miles east of town) is the Redcliffs Lodge which has nice food in a western movie setting. It also as a neat western movies museum downstairs.

I'm sitting here at the Moab Brewery after completing the Whole Enchilada, an epic ride that descends thousands of feet from the La Sal Mountains into Moab, Utah.

The fries seemed okay at the start, but as they cooled off, they were blah. In a town full of fun and eclectic restaurants, it felt boring and forgettable.

We also enjoyed trying some local beer, and the atmosphere was fun and casual. Definitely a great pick if you’re looking to end the day on a high note.
