Reviews Summary

Oro by Nixta is celebrated for its elevated Mexican cuisine, with many praising the exceptional quality and creativity of dishes, especially those highlighting heirloom masa. Diners frequently mention the outstanding Quesabirria tacos and the unique flavor profiles. The ambiance and service also receive high marks, often described as warm, attentive, and welcoming. While generally praised, some guests note that prices can be high for the portion sizes, and service occasionally experiences minor delays.

"Elevated Mexican food in NE Mpls! Let's start with the heirloom corn because it really does make a difference in the flavor of the corn tortillas and tostadas we had. The house-made tortillas are exceptional, and dishes like the Guacamole, Tetela de Huitlacoche (made with nixtamal, huitlacoche, salsa de queso), and Tacos de Pato (duck confit served on a jicama tortilla with avocado mousse and cranberry pico) really showcase the freshness and creativity of the kitchen.

My favorite dish was the Quesabirria (three beef birria and quesillo tacos served with consomé, cactus salad). We also tried the Barbacoa, a slow-roasted lamb shank — great flavors, though I wished it had been a little more spicy. The Pollo con Mole (chicken thigh with mole) was plated like something you'd expect at a high-end tasting menu. The chicken was tender and juicy, and the fried plantain added a perfect complement to the mole and chicken.

My mezcal cocktail, however, was a miss — it lacked the boozy burn I like to balance the sweetness of the fruit flavors.

Overall, I would highly recommend a visit to this top-notch Mexican eatery — definitely order a bunch of dishes to share! The ambiance is cozy with vibrant Mexican flair, and the service was spot on. Cost without tip for 4 people was $215. Reservations recommended."

"Everything my tastebuds touched induced a warm feeling of love, joy, and satisfaction. All the dishes we tried upon the first bite I felt my shoulders relax and my mouth excited about the flavors and textures. I’m usually a very picky eater but I went in thinking I was going to try anything I could and I am so incredibly happy I did. Service and staff were polite knowledgeable and attentive, we were treated like family. The atmosphere is so welcoming and the art on the walls are beautiful, deep and thoughtful. Everyone involved in the operation has put their heart into this place and you can tell. Can’t wait to bring everyone I know for this wonderful experience."

"We had been meaning to go here as we've heard great things. We took a friend for her birthday dinner and enjoyed many dishes together. Everything was quite delicious, flavorful, and delectable! The quesabirria appetizer was our favorite!

Get your reservations early as they are not open every day and the reservations fill up quickly!

Enjoy!"

Minneapolis' Best Restaurants

Between its James Beard nomination for Best New Restaurant and spot on Bon Appétit's own year-end list, Oro by Nixta hit the ground running in 2024. Chefs Gustavo and Kate Romero first launched their business as a love letter to masa during the pandemic — one that was expressed through pop-ups, weekly takeout dinners and some of the country's most complex heirloom corn tortillas. That mission now carries on over to a dine-in menu that's meant to be shared and devoured.

The extraordinary heirloom masa is the backbone of Oro’s menu, with ground corn kernels doing the heavy work in everything from chips and tacos to tamales and pastries. Order the carnitas taco for perfectly crisped bits of pork paired with a creamy avocado salsa. Anything with mole is also a must, especially the duck enmoladas that get a slight bittersweet taste from dark chocolate in the sauce.

Where our restaurant critic takes a first-time visitor to eat over a weekend in Minneapolis

We box up the pizza and head a few doors down, to Oro by Nixta, where I found a new favorite dish: the lengua taco ($7 each). Slippery organ meat is cooked until tender, with a little heat from the chile de arbol that's softened by the cured onion, and it's all snugly wrapped within those mythical corn tortillas. "Just a taco each?" asks co-owner Kate Romero.

Behind the List: Picking Our Top 75 Restaurants

I personally love Mexican food and Mexican chefs, and you can see that in the list: El Sazon, Nico’s, Taqueria y Birrieria, Las Cuatro Milpas, Andale, Oro by Nixta, and more. We wanted to make sure some of the underrated gems were on the list, like Joan’s in the Park and Brunson’s Pub. And we made sure we had east metro and west side representation, too.

Dining here is really like taking a senior seminar in our continent’s most important native grain, corn. Try it in fresh-made tortillas that might smell oaky or even meaty, depending on the corn variety. Try it in one tamale stuffed with confit rabbit or in another tamale with strawberries and rhubarb.
