Reviews Summary

Myriel is praised for its exceptional farm-to-table dining, intimate atmosphere, and outstanding service, with many highlighting signature dishes like the duck breast. While most reviews are glowing, a few diners have experienced issues with salty food or long wait times, and one reviewer found the seating policy misleading.

"The restaurant seemed quite backed up so wait times were longer than expected but the service was extremely apologetic, friendly and accomodating which more than made up for it. Most other restaurants, in my experience, would have apologized for the longer times and moved on. The staff at Myriel went out of their way to make sure we had a great experience.

The atmosphere feels classy and cozy. Dined at 7 so the restaurant was full up. There was moderate noise but you can easily still hear anyone speaking.

The food was delicious. The duck breast in particular was amazing. Portions are relatively small but the dishes were also quite rich so they filled my appetite quite nicely."

"This was definitely elevated. To me the cuisine was Germanic. Honestly, most Germanic restaurants to me are piles of what we Minnesotan’s call hot dish. Not the case here. I would go back for the duck breast 10 out of 10 times. It was amazing! The Manhattan they made me was shaken, not stirred and if you know anything about Manhattans if you ever had a bad one, it was shaken. That said, at least it wasn’t a “microtini!” BUT, everything else was unique. The gnocchi was made in an unusual way, not with potatoes but rye flour, the best I have ever had! You should try this place."

"We have enjoyed Myriel on several occasions. Our friend invited us for dinner in the private dining room. It is a beautiful room, and each course was thoughtfully prepared. It is always a special experience. Chef Karyn and her staff provide amazing hospitality. The menu changed often as Chef Karyn sources from local farmers."

If we overheard someone say Myriel was secretly run by woodland nymphs, we’d believe them. The menu changes daily but you can always expect locally-foraged produce like wild plums or juniper berries and whole-animal butchery—two unrevolutionary practices, however, this fancy spot does them better than everywhere else in town. On Wednesday there might be crispy duck breast with a delicately applied tangy sauce, and on Saturday, some spicy lamb sausage on a bed of tender white beans.

We were definitely bordering on full when we rolled into Myriel, but I knew Lynn would love chef Karyn Tomlinson’s sparse, Nordic sensibilities. Since Tomlinson focuses on whole-animal butchery — and that means using every part of the animal — we had to start with the charcuterie plate. A rich, creamy duck-liver pate and some duck rillettes were paired with some local, cave-aged blue cheese and little yellow bean pickles for some perfect first bites.

Small and intimate, Myriel is simple elegance made edible with foraged ingredients, Grandma’s pie crust, and the giddy touch of a chef comfortable in her own space. You don’t scroll through a menu online; you trust her kitchen and sign up for a tasting menu that might include braised duck legs on lentils or a brightly vivacious yet humble carrot salad served on nostalgic plates that have a clear and solid place in 2022 and beyond.

Minnesota should have a Michelin Guide, and these 4 restaurants should be in it

When Karyn Tomlinson opened St. Paul’s Myriel in late fall three years ago, the florid explanations that servers would give about the dishes’ provenance felt theatrical. It also felt appropriate. Could carrots, greens and brined cheese sourced from these boutique purveyors really be this good?
