What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
La Dama is praised for its innovative and upscale Mexican cuisine, stylish ambiance, and attentive service, making it a great spot for special occasions and date nights. Diners particularly love the creative tacos and seafood dishes, along with the well-crafted cocktails and pleasant patio seating. However, some find the prices high for the portion sizes and occasionally lack of seasoning, with a few reviews noting disappointing execution on certain dishes.
"Buzzy, intimate dining room adjacent to the open concept kitchen. Great date spot.
Favorite bite was the vegetable tlayuda. Rich flavors, complex textures on top of a perfectly crunchy tortilla."
Jeremy Miller
"Great drinks. Amazing food. Best tacos I’ve had in a long time. Limited seating so be sure to make reservation in advance."

"La Dama is a beautiful spot with a warm vibe, a great back patio, and a menu full of thoughtful flavor. We came on a Tuesday and definitely recommend it — $5 margaritas and $5 off guac were a nice bonus and a great way to kick things off!
The guacamole was super fresh with radish and tomato for a little texture - simple, clean, and well-seasoned. The margs were solid too, not too sweet at all.
The real standout was the Salmon Encrustado… perfectly cooked, juicy, and paired with beet purée and hibiscus reduction that actually brought the whole dish together. Would 100% order again.
The Cochinita Pibil had a beautiful presentation, but flavor-wise, it just didn’t stand out. Not bad, just not memorable.
I appreciated how accommodating the kitchen was with my food allergies on the Cazuela de Repollitos y Hongos. The flavors were great - especially the pomegranate and chimichurri! the dish was a little too oily for my taste but tasty nonetheless-the-less.
We also tried the birria tacos, which were definitely tasty — super flavorful — but $21 for three tacos felt hard to justify, even in a higher-end setting.
Service was a highlight — our server was incredible: friendly, attentive, and even surprised my friend with a birthday dessert 🎂
Overall: La Dama delivers on experience! great staff, beautiful atmosphere, and solid food with a few standouts. On the pricier side, but worth checking out, especially if you go on a Tuesday."

Critic Rachel Bernhard's Top 25
In a city flush with very good Mexican restaurants, La Dama elevates the scene with contemporary, finer-dining touches on traditional dishes from its chef's native home. When Peggy Magister, who passed away this year, transformed her beloved Crazy Water kitchen into this cheery, Mexican-inspired cubbyhole in 2020, it befuddled some — but not for long. She gave creative control to longtime Crazy Water chef Emmanuel Corona, who stuffs chilitos rellenos with duck carnitas; tucks crab claw meat into queso fundido; and fills tacos with huitlacoche, orange juice-braised pork shoulder and ahi tuna with crispy peanut slaw.
Top 5 to Try: Mexican restaurants
La Dama has been among the local restaurants to set the bar for modern Mexican fare with a laundry list of ever-changing items from inventive tacos and tostadas to entrees like citrus crusted salmon with beet puree, chapulin and toasted corn hibiscus reduction. Don't miss the amazing duck carnitas tacos with quince compote, purslane and housemade mole or their tender lamb shank barilla with pasilla consomme, chickpeas, onions, cilantro and chile de arbol. It's mouthwateringly delicious.
The Best Restaurants in Milwaukee
Chef/owner Emmanuel Corona challenges the popular notion of Mexican cuisine as simple. In his hands, it’s complex, inventive and quite elegant, from grilled shrimp in tomatillo and brown butter to chilitos rellenos stuffed with duck carnitas to beef cheek barbacoa enchiladas to lamb shank birria. And even with its concept change in 2020, La Dama still reflects the spirit of predecessor Crazy Water and its founder Peggy Magister, who passed away last year.

This stylish restaurant offers authentic Mexican food with a modern touch. Located just south of downtown Milwaukee, this is a higher-end and pricy Mexican restaurant but great for date nights or special occasions. The menu is inspired by the markets of Mexico City, Puebla, and Oaxaca.
The Best Restaurants in Milwaukee Wisconsin for 2025
Chef Emanuel Corona took over after Peggy Magister retired in 2021 and brings serious fine-dining chops to La Dama, where Oaxacan mole meets Milwaukee chic. The room is airy, the cocktails stiff, and every plate makes the case for elevated Mexican food without a single taco in sight.
