It's been searing up porterhouses and bacon-wrapped filets since 1948 and is still going strong. Get the retro filet oscar, topped with asparagus, crab meat, and hollandaise alongside a Sazerac.

Locals will say the best ones are out of Milwaukee’s limits, but find great examples at The Packing House and Five O’Clock Steakhouse. If you’re there on a Friday, opt for the Fish Fry, that’s a holdover from the prohibition and more Catholic era, but a locally treasured experience.

Nostalgia has defined the 5 O’Clock Club since it opened, as just a bar (under the name Coerper’s 5 O’Clock Club), in 1945. The ownership has changed but part of the reason the popularity of this joint hasn’t waned is it’s kept the trademarks intact: Diners belly up to the bar, where they order a drink and place their dinner order before being escorted to a table where that entrée comes with so much more – relish tray, loaf of warm bread with honey and butter, family-style salad and choice of potato. It’s hard to imagine a steakhouse story devoid of a 5 O’Clock mention, even though my recent visit didn’t illustrate the culinary best of this place.

Kegel’s Inn is a remnant of old Milwaukee in West Allis—a German restaurant with Old World charm is authentic, many Bavarian dishes and a fish fry with many options (baked included). Kegel’s “Classic Fish Fry” includes five pieces of lightly battered, golden brown cod with two slices of hearty rye bread, homemade coleslaw and a choice of soup. French fries and mashed potatoes are the standard sides, but Kegel’s also offers some unusual alternatives: potato pancakes, red cabbage or spaetzle.

Just west of downtown is the Five O’Clock Steakhouse, which goes back to the 1950s. It is truly a classic supper club right in the middle of downtown Milwaukee.
