Reviews Summary

Toby's Supper Club is lauded for its authentic Wisconsin supper club atmosphere, friendly service, and classic American fare. Diners rave about the Friday fish fry, the vintage vibe, and delicious cocktails. However, some visitors note that steaks can be average, and the wait times can be significant due to its popularity.

"I was sold on the vintage feel of this place. Family run for 58 years. We heard the wait can be long, due to its popularity. When you get there, you have to see the bartender and let them know you want to be added to seating list. You can order drinks in the meantime , and a waitress will come over, and take your food order at the bar.
We were able to snag bar seats, put in our dining order and within 20 minutes, our kind waitress informed us our table was ready. I was surprised as I was well aware with the popularity of this restaurant, you must be patient since there is a wait at times.

The staff was beyond friendly including the bar staff. This place is a TRUE supper club. Veggies, pickles, dinner rolls, crackers to start. My filet, cooked to perfection and LOADED with mushrooms. I recommend the hash browns too. Prices are so reasonable. Will return!! I was stuffed when I left this restaurant"

"Fantastic Wisconsin supper club! Great food, packed with customers every night. Friends tell me their chicken, fish and steaks are great, but I’ve been going for decades for the best shrimp ever!"

"This out of the way family “Supper Club “ 55 year old plus restaurant was well worth the visit. The family members still operate this gem of a restaurant and it seemed to be filled by the locals . We were greeted at the door and told sit at the bar to order our food off the menu until a table was open. Well, that made business at the bar booming so you ended up getting to know a few people at the bar. The drinks and the food was great. For a Monday night the place was packed. Just get into the mood that you’ll have to wait a lot of time for your food. We left at 9;30 pm and the place was still packed. Add this place to your dining list if you want a over the top fun place to dine."

McFarlandFew states take Friday fish fry as seriously as Wisconsin, and Toby’s Supper Club, located in the nearby town of McFarland, transforms the Midwestern tradition into a full-on sport. Here, patrons must pre-order dinner at the bustling bar—a practice that requires an early arrival and dogged determination. But if you’re game, it’s well worth the effort.

The Best Restaurants in Madison, Wisconsin 2025

Dining at a real-deal Wisconsin supper club was at the top of my Madison to-do list, and Toby’s did not disappoint. Visuals director Thomas Payne and I were lucky enough to score seats at the bar, where a friendly local let us in on the restaurant’s protocol: sit at the bar (or stand and hover if it’s a busy night), have a drink, put your dinner order in, and when your food is ready, a server will bring you to your table. We did as instructed, and a round of old-fashioneds later, we were rewarded with a hearty steak and fish fry dinner complete with all the fixings: soup or salad, your choice of potato (we opted for Toby’s fluffy, crisp-edged hash browns), a relish tray, and a bread basket that included both dinner rolls and, to our surprise and delight, cinnamon rolls.

Supper Clubs are a very midwest thing, particularly a thing you’ll find all over Wisconsin. They started circa 1940’s in Milwaukee and are a classic multi-course dining experience without the price tag. Think: white linen tablecloths and napkins, tiny candles on the table, dark wood interiors and a bar full of locals.
