What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
North of Bourbon is a highly-regarded speakeasy praised for its creative cocktails, extensive bourbon selection, and flavorful Southern-inspired cuisine. Guests rave about the unique ambiance, especially the barrel booths, and the attentive, friendly service. While most reviews are glowing, some note that reservations are essential due to its popularity, and the service can occasionally feel strained during peak hours.
"This is a really cool place to visit. The best way I can describe the food menu is eclectic. But it’s really good. As for the Bourbon mix, too many to count which made it a great time ordering different brands. Staff was great! The code took time to go over some of the local history and discuss bourbons at length. Definitely will visit again!"

"Absolutely fantastic atmosphere and lighting! Busy and fun yet professional feeling! The staff are very welcoming and kind. We didn't have a reservation and they still went above and beyond with service and getting us a seat.
Our server explained the specials and the pour of the week along with the base menu. They very careful and accommodating with allergies! Any issues we had they fixed immediately.
Drinks were fantastic and food looked amazing. Tasted amazing too! This an absolute gem in Kentucky that needs to be seen more often. I must have visit for any trip or special occasion!
We had the crispy andouille, herb crusted swordfish, peppered catfish nuggets and a few drinks! Absolutely splendid places and worth every penny!"
Star Myst
"I really enjoyed North of Bourbon!! I was in Louisville with a group of 8 others and they were really accommodating- getting us in for dinner at 8:30. The space is super cute and intimate - I thought the wine barrel booths were a unique touch. Everything I ate was delicious. Our server was really kind and helpful. I ordered the Caesar and crab rice - 10/10 on both for sureeee. There were others in our party who didn’t love the Caesar because it’s nontraditional, but it was spot on for me, 10/10, no notes. The wine pairing our server suggested was perfect for my meal - I had a white wine blend that really took my whole dining experience up a notch. If I’m ever back in the area, I’ll be sure to get by here again!"

Six of the best bars in Louisville
You can do just this at North Of Bourbon, a hip, family-run hangout in Germantown where creole food features heavily on the menu and the backlit bar runs the gamut of Kentucky’s finest bourbons. Pull up a pew in one of the booths, made entirely from vintage barrel staves. The tables are also created with reclaimed flooring from neighbouring distilleries.
Grab a Dram at One of These Lesser Known Louisville Bars
Debuting a bar on New Year's Eve is a bold move, but that trial by fire worked out for North of Bourbon, says co-owner Daniel Holyfield. He also owns a local flooring company and mill, and used reclaimed wood from a rickhouse for the floor, tables, and bar top. The booths are ensconced in enormous bourbon barrel replicas—made from charred white oak.The bar stocks more than 300 bourbons, as well as a “dusty locker” with vintage bottles like an Old Crow 10 year old Chessmen decanter and Wild Turkey “Cheesy Gold Foil.” Cocktails include several riffs on an Old Fashioned and one made with Maker's Mark, peanut orgeat, and cola—a play on peanuts in Coke, a Southern favorite.

Where To Drink Now In Louisville, Kentucky
A bit ashamed it took me a minute to get the clever name of this Germantown spot that is a marriage of bourbon country and creole and Cajun food from New Orleans (Bourbon Street), but the combination sings. On my brunch visit, the beignets from Chef Lawrence Weeks were a big hit, along with the buttermilk salad, and the cocktails were exceptional. The I Wish You Would used Wild Turkey in a light-yet-decadent milk punch, and the Frozen Kentucky Coffee comes with a cup you can keep in a nod to the Erin Rose in New Orleans.

During lunch, all the salads are vegetarian including a vegan Caesar or choose from catfish nuggets, shrimp po'boys, catfish po'boys, shrimp and grits, or the bourbon grilled cheese. In the evenings, the crab fondue, mushroom meunière, seafood Clemenceau, crab rice dressing and shrimp yakamein.
The Best Food In Louisville According to Chef Edward Lee
Chef Lawrence Weeks brings the real Cajun flavor to the 502. I love everything on his menu at this cozy restaurant filled with spirited chatter and drunken laughter, but the boudin balls are so crispy, so unctuous and so porkalicious, the flavor sticks on my lips long after the meal is over like a porcine lip balm. I often find myself wanting to skip dessert and order another helping of these addictive boudin balls.
Louisville’s Top Bourbon Bars
Bourbon Street meets Bourbon City at this recently opened neighborhood bar and restaurant. Chef Lawrence Weeks, who has Louisiana roots, riffs on Cajun and Creole classics for his lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch menus (start with a Frozen Kentucky Coffee and dig into a plate of grillades and grits). The food also pairs exceptionally well with a pour from the dozens of bourbon and ryes lining the back bar.
