What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Tokyo Fried Chicken is widely praised for its exceptionally juicy and crispy fried chicken, featuring a delightful Japanese-Southern fusion. Diners also rave about the creative and flavorful side dishes, such as curry creamed corn and soy-glazed yams. While the food is a major draw, be prepared for potentially long wait times due to the restaurant's popularity and limited seating. Some reviews mention the skin being a bit too crispy, but overall satisfaction is high.
"I always drive by place but never felt compelled to try it out since I thought how good could it be?
I was wrong. The chicken is definitely the stand out dish here. Get a bucket of the warm crispy goodness because it was juicy but packed with so much flavor! The breading on the fried chicken is lightly spicy, super crunchy, and light at the same time.
I loved the spicy sauce but def felt like it needed something acidic to cut the sweetness. The pickled cabbage was our fav side."

"Waited a good 40 minutes. There will always be people outside because they only have 3 tables inside at the moment. I’d recommend you to get it to go if you can. Not sure if it’ll taste the same though. We ordered the family pack. Waited for 30 minutes or so. It comes with sauces and sides! The chicken was super juicy and delicious! We ordered the spicy chicken skin as well. It was a bit pricey for how much they gave us. Didn’t fill up half the bag. The pricing overall for this spot is pretty up there. Parking isn’t difficult but if every shop opened in this plaza, you might not find parking."

"Worth the money.
10-15min from order to take out
My suspicion: tenders are full breasts. Sandwiches are made from boneless thighs.
So delicious I ate like a pig at a trough.
The chicken is worth the price here! Would eat here again. YUM. Ordered take out at 7pm on a Saturday night. Called and gave my name and last name initial with credit card information. Picked my order of one regular, one spicy chicken sandwich and 6 piece mixed. Mixed is drumsticks and tenders. Promise time 10-15 minutes. Ready as promised. Signed and left. I suspect the sandwiches are made from chicken thighs. Extra delicious. The spicy sandwich starts slow and builds. Comes with a pickle."

In a green, Monterey Park strip mall with a faux-Chinese glazed tile roof, you'll find Tokyo Fried Chicken's flavorful hybrid of Japanese karaage and Southern fried chicken. Each bird is marinated overnight in soy, garlic and ginger before it's dredged, fried to a delicate crisp in rice bran oil then dusted with the house seasoning. Prepare to feast with a plastic glove on one hand and chopsticks in the other — it's just what you do here.
Best restaurants to try in Los Angeles 2024, ranked
For years, Tokyo Fried Chicken Co. was a tiny operation in a strip mall in Monterey Park. Visits required advance coordination with friends and a volunteer to arrive an hour early to get on the waitlist. I experienced a pinch-me moment last year when owners Kouji and Elaine Yamanashi closed the original location and opened a restaurant in downtown Los Angeles with counter service and ample seating.
