What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Moo's Craft Barbecue is lauded for its exceptional Texas-style brisket and creative CaliMex twists, with many praising the tender meats and flavorful sides like mac and cheese. However, some diners find certain meats dry or lacking flavor, and service can be inconsistent. The restaurant is a must-visit for authentic BBQ enthusiasts, though arriving early is key.
"Moo’s Craft Barbecue is an absolute gem for Texas-style BBQ lovers in LA. From the moment you arrive, the vibe is welcoming and bold, just like their flavors. The brisket was phenomenal—perfectly smoked, tender, and full of flavor with a bark that hits all the right notes.
But what really stood out were the small details that elevated the entire experience. The plate came with fresh white onion slices, crisp house-made pickles, and perfectly tangy jalapeños that added just the right kick. Every garnish felt intentional, not just thrown on. The mac and cheese had a crunchy topping that gave it great texture, and the Frito pie was fully loaded and balanced with sliced scallions and fresh chili.
Then there’s the Key Lime Pie—silky, smooth, and not overly sweet. The thick graham cracker crust had a perfect crunch, and the whipped cream with a lime wedge garnish made it as photogenic as it was delicious.
I highly recommend Moo’s Craft Barbecue. You can taste the care in every bite, and it’s clear they don’t overlook the details. This place doesn’t just serve BBQ—it serves a full, flavorful experience"

"I went with a buddy who had heard great things about this place for a long time and he wanted to go to check it out. We are both very experienced on as BBQ chefs and has high expectations based on what we had heard. You'll need to get there about 30 min before it opens and get in line. Get in early and you won't have to worry about getting table. When you get inside, you'll find a menu that is sent complicated, but seemed auspicious. We got a sampling of ribs, pulled pork, pork belly, tri tip, a burger, Mac & cheese and potato salad. The highlights were the sides and the burger. The burger was fresh and hot and full of flavor. I can say the same about the rest of the meats. Pork was very dry and bland, pork belly was smothered in what tasted like a teriyaki miso sauce that overpowered the pork belly. The ribs had a dry rub, and you didn't have to fight them, but they were lacking in flavor. You could see the smoke, but not taste it. The rub was a bit mild like pepper that had started to lose flavor. Not much to be excited about. Theac & cheese was creamy and full flavored without being too rich and the potato salad was perfectly balanced. Good fresh dill in there set it off. Overall, I'd say it was fine. Nothing really to get excited about and didn't really live up to the hype. Also, I asked for a couple of boxes and the girl behind the counter slapped them down in my hand. I said thank you and she didn't make eye contact. Maybe she was having a bad day. Who knows. Would I go back? Not sure. It seems like a mix of things rather than just BBQ. Kimchi & fried rice, chili cheese, miso pork belly and dry rub ribs. Seems like there wasn't really a true identity that would convince me it was a BBQ place. I also feel like what we wasn't straight from the smoker, like I. Other BBQ places. It seemed like it was made and reheated. Overall, good burger, good beer selection and food banana pudding. The table sauces were not great either, so it was a bit confusing. As far as BBQ goes, I would go other places to get BBQ, but if I found myself in the neighborhood, craving a burger, I'd go back for that. If I were nearby."

"Best bbq since Austin, could it be better? Certainly. The tenderness of the meat and ambiance was spectecular. Sides? They were on point. Lot’s of BBQ places slacks on sides but not these guys! 10/10."

Best BBQ in Los Angeles For Ribs, Fried Chicken and More
Moo’s doesn’t just make some of the best BBQ we’ve ever tasted—it makes some of the best food, period. Of course, the BBQ is the draw from husband-and-wife team Andrew and Michelle Muñoz, who started Moo’s Craft Barbecue as an Eastside pop-up before becoming one of Smorgasburg’s most popular vendors. Now they’re opening their first brick-and-mortar restaurant, right in the heart of Lincoln Heights, set to open in June and offering their signature Texas-style smoked brisket that’s perfectly encrusted with a peppery blend of spices.
The 25 Best Restaurants In LA - Los Angeles
California’s central coast has a rich barbecue tradition and places like Maple Block, Slab, and Bludso’s continue to smoke delicious meats. But selling the idea of great barbecue in LA to anyone outside of LA has always been met with heavy eye rolls. The arrival of Moo’s in Lincoln Heights, however, changed everything.

Best family-friendly and kid-friendly restaurants in Los Angeles
Andrew and Michelle Muñoz’s first forays into smoked meats were sparked, like many other current-generation pitmasters, by last decade’s countrywide mania for central Texas’ beefy traditions. But even before they transitioned from their breakout pop-up to their always-busy restaurant in Lincoln Heights, they had spliced Mexican flavors into their Lone Star-inspired techniques, spearheading a new school of Los Angeles barbecue. Andrew’s brisket, rendered nearly to pudding and perfumed by smoldering California white oak, sets the bar for excellence.

High school sweethearts Andrew and Michelle Muñoz are living their dream. What began as a weekend hobby of smoking meats in their backyard has evolved into a full-fledged restaurant in Lincoln Heights. Chef and co-owner Michelle Muñoz is the driving creative influence behind well-loved dishes like the verde sausage, which combines Texas Barbecue with her Mexican-American-Angeleno heritage, a distinctive version of Mexican street corn, and her unique smoked beef cheek tacos.
Los Angeles' Best New Restaurants 2022
The supple, standard-bearing brisket and fat-flecked beef ribs at Andrew and Michelle Muñoz’s Moo’s Craft Barbecue are meaty, smoky bliss that would be taken seriously in Austin. But Moo’s is very much a vital L.A. restaurant because the Muñozes weave in their Mexican-Angeleno roots with dishes like a cheese-and-poblano-filled pork verde sausage that’s reminiscent of a chile relleno.
