What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Ordinarie Tavern garners praise for its unique seasonal pop-ups, acclaimed burgers, and lively atmosphere with live music. While many customers enjoy the delicious food and friendly service, some reviews mention overly sweet cocktails and an instance of rude behavior from bartenders, particularly regarding seating.
"Was looking for a place nearby that was showing the Olympic Men's Basketball Gold Medal game and found this place. Very cool atmosphere and decor. Service was great. The Bartender Eric was super friendly and helpful. I asked him for any refreshing cocktail and he made a few different ones that were are all delicious.
Ordered the Tavern Burger and that was also super delicious! It had pickled jalapeno's in it which was super good and not super spicy. Also, their ketchup and ranch was homemade and fresh. Overall, delicious food, great service, and a cool place. Definitely would come back."

"A quaint tavern/pub style restaurant on the Promenade with a small, rustic-style food menu and a larger, more contemporary offering of Drafts, Wine, and Cocktails.
The food is quite good, albeit simply flavored, but also fairly expensive for the portions offered."
Quinn Calvert
"This place and its waitstaff are quirky and well intentioned. However, when ordering apps and entrees, instead of pacing the meal, EVERYTHING was delivered at the same time, leaving us rushed to finish a salad and then conquer our lukewarm entrees. Steak Frites lacked any flavor and had to drench in salt and pepper. Considering how quickly the food was cooked the steak was cold and had a big brick of cold garlic butter. Sadly wished for more."

The 22 essential dishes from Long Beach restaurants across 2022
First thing first: The Ordinarie has always has incredible burgers but newly minted Executive Chef Shelbi Ulm’s take, an ode to the SoCal staple-that-is-so-strong-it-borders-culty that is In N Out, is one that elevates The Ordinarie into offering one of the best burgers in the city. Ulm’s house made Thousand Island—just a hint of sweet but more toward the salty and tart—is slathered onto each side of the bun, where pickles and house-pickled jalapeños—a nod toward the packet of hot yellow chiles one can and should get upon request from In N Out—and good ol’ American cheese and lettuce. The result is a wonderfully nostalgic, this-is-what-I-remember-as-a-kid bites of a burger, where In N Out was more than a fast food joint but a destination toward something great.
Cuisine Scene: Just Desserts
While it’s always worth ordering a slice of pie at The Ordinarie (210 The Promenade N), with flavors that change with the season, there is no question that your sweet tooth will savor the Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookie Sundae. At its foundation, the sundae is anchored by a large, freshly baked cookie, served in a personal-sized skillet. Then comes a great globe of vanilla ice cream that melts into the warm cookie, a swirl of whipped cream, a drizzle of caramel sauce, and at the top, a macerated cherry, which lends a touch of zing and sophistication to a wholly satisfyingly sweet experience.
The 25 Best Restaurants in Long Beach: 2019 Edition
Taking over the old Blue Cafe, The Ordinarie is the brainchild of Auld Dubliner’s longtime bar master, Christy Caldwell and is his ode to American hospitality. The “ordinarie,” or what later became known as the tavern, was written into the laws of the early American colonies: “Every community is required by law to build an Ordinarie for the receiving, refreshment and entertainment of travelers and strangers.”. In this sense, ordinaries were an integral part of early American culture, a space where people were encouraged to eat, drink and discuss the times and needs of the community.
Where to Drink in Long Beach, California
Long Beach has been considered LA’s little sister for a long time but recently has started to step out on her own,” says Christy Caldwell, proprietor of Long Beach tavern The Ordinarie. Sitting approximately 20 miles south of downtown LA, Long Beach manages to feel a world away (and, in fact, is often used to portray Miami in TV shows like Dexter and CSI). But a wave of new establishments, from cocktail bars and coffee shops to the city’s first distillery, has opened over the last few years alongside Long Beach stalwarts to create an evolving flavor all the city’s own.
