First thing first: The Ordinarie has always has incredible burgers but newly minted Executive Chef Shelbi Ulm’s take, an ode to the SoCal staple-that-is-so-strong-it-borders-culty that is In N Out, is one that elevates The Ordinarie into offering one of the best burgers in the city. Ulm’s house made Thousand Island—just a hint of sweet but more toward the salty and tart—is slathered onto each side of the bun, where pickles and house-pickled jalapeños—a nod toward the packet of hot yellow chiles one can and should get upon request from In N Out—and good ol’ American cheese and lettuce. The result is a wonderfully nostalgic, this-is-what-I-remember-as-a-kid bites of a burger, where In N Out was more than a fast food joint but a destination toward something great.

While it’s always worth ordering a slice of pie at The Ordinarie (210 The Promenade N), with flavors that change with the season, there is no question that your sweet tooth will savor the Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookie Sundae. At its foundation, the sundae is anchored by a large, freshly baked cookie, served in a personal-sized skillet. Then comes a great globe of vanilla ice cream that melts into the warm cookie, a swirl of whipped cream, a drizzle of caramel sauce, and at the top, a macerated cherry, which lends a touch of zing and sophistication to a wholly satisfyingly sweet experience.

Taking over the old Blue Cafe, The Ordinarie is the brainchild of Auld Dubliner’s longtime bar master, Christy Caldwell and is his ode to American hospitality. The “ordinarie,” or what later became known as the tavern, was written into the laws of the early American colonies: “Every community is required by law to build an Ordinarie for the receiving, refreshment and entertainment of travelers and strangers.”. In this sense, ordinaries were an integral part of early American culture, a space where people were encouraged to eat, drink and discuss the times and needs of the community.

My husband and I finally went to The Ordinarie during their annual MIRACLE at The Ordinarie holiday takeover. The drinks were by far my favorite part of the menu, but the popovers and chicken pot pie empanadas were also worth diving into. During happy hour, the small plates are $2 off, you can grab featured cocktails for $10 or $2 off all wine, beer and house spirits.

We had lunch at The Ordinarie sitting in their outdoor patio dining area. I love restaurants that have a great kids menu, not just chicken nuggets and fries so I love it here where they offer salmon and vegetables on the kids menu. They do have a homemade mac and cheese on the kids menu too.

The place, with its old England/old New England vibe, tries to give the mixed drinks a certain period sense. And so, The Liberty Flip is made with rum, Madeira, spiced pumpkin, egg and cream. Which they probably didn’t drink back in ye olde tymes.
