Moku Roots opened in May 2018 by two friends, Alexa Caskey and Erica Gale.As a vegetarian for over 15 years, Alexa always struggled to find interesting vegetarian options in Maui. After starting her gourmet popsicle company, Maui Tropsicles, she knew she wanted to create a restaurant that offered vegetarians and vegans a creative, constantly changing menu to keep things exciting for locals and tourists. Her farm, Mala ‘Akala, located only 6 miles away in beautiful Launiupoko, serves Moku Roots with a bounty of fresh, organically managed vegetables!

However, a quick look at the menu shows that vegans can enjoy any of the plates, bowls, salads, and even sides without asking for any substitutions at all. The cafe, located in Lahaina in the island's west, is proudly farm-to-table and even uses its own farm, Mala 'Akala, to source many of the ingredients. They’re now located in what’s considered “upcountry” and offer special Friday dinners, Sunday brunch events, farm tours, and other special events. The food is amazing and you can even find their products, like the veggie burger, sold in other restaurants such as Captain Jack’s and Cool Cat. But what is even cooler is that they are the only restaurant on Maui that uses only bio-degradable containers that have zero impact on the environment.

Head to Moku Roots for delicious vegan fare where almost everything can be made gluten-free!. I really enjoyed the Vegan Cobb salad, which came with a house-made macadamia nut ranch dressing and coconut bacon. The restaurant is zero waste so all takeout orders come in stainless steel containers that is paid with a refundable $10 deposit.
