He was honored with the ‘Aipono award for Maui Chef of the Year in 2018, with experience in famed kitchens like Humuhumunukunukuapua’a, The Banyan Tree at the Ritz-Carlton, and various Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Villa restaurants.

Mala Ocean Tavern has a beautiful ocean view and a few solid veggie choices if you’re looking for a higher end dining experience in Lahaina. There are of course some vegan salad options and as far as vegetarian food goes, the burrata is a fantastic appetizer and adult mac and cheese is super indulgent and delicious. They are also extremely accommodating and can put some vegan sides together for a beautiful meal to enjoy with craft cocktails and Maui’s famous sunsets.

They use healthy, organically grown food and fresh fish to make intriguing dishes. The atmosphere could not be more enticing, with just a handful of tables out on the oceanfront lanai and several more tables in the warmly decorated interior.

I probably shouldn’t lump these two restaurants together, but it’s hard to mention just one without mentioning its neighbor. Both Westside restaurants are located right next to each other at Mala Wharf (RIP Frida’s Mexican Beach House!), and they all share a spectacular oceanside view (and a parking lot). The food quality and service at all three are excellent, and we choose which one to visit depending on what we’re craving that day.

Mala is also one of the best places for snorkel safely with sea turtles in Maui. This artificial reef was formed when the old pier collapsed into the water after a hurricane many years ago. Nature began to grow coral on the underwater pier and now it is home to dozens of green sea turtles, octopus, tropical fish, and even reef sharks!.
