Japengo (Kaanapali): The sunset views are dazzling from this promontory at the Hyatt Regency Maui, but so is the artful sushi and innovative Japanese fusion dishes incorporating fresh island ingredients. Despite stiff competition, it’s justifiably a perennial favorite in local polling.

Japengo in the Hyatt has very good sushi (reservations are mandatory). At Whalers Village you have Leilanis and Hula Grill (same owner as Kimos) which are both a lot of fun. Monkeypod Kitchen has a good bar and Mai Tai but we don't think much of the food.

A big draw here is the Hyatt’s main restaurant, Japengo, a longtime anchor in the westside culinary scene that just keeps getting better and better. Go for all manner of raw fish and stay for the Vietnamese-style Kurabota pork.

Japengo is the sushi and seafood restaurant on-site at the Hyatt Regency Maui. The miso-glazed salmon was delicious!. They also brought out a whole sushi boat for us to try, though it’s not really on the menu.

Delicious, fresh sushi, beautifully prepared and amazing views to boot!. I've heard they also have an amazing Happy Hour, but we haven't made it there for that yet....gotta save something for the next visit!

Ka’anapali has dazzling fare as well, such as Japengo in the Hyatt (though obscenely priced), which was recently named the Best Resort Restaurant on Maui by readers of the rag Maui Time.

Great steaks and authentic sushi prepared with the finest seafood are among the reasons Japengo won ʻAipono Silver for Best Pacific Rim Cuisine in 2023.

A lot of gluten free options and the menu is very clearly marked. Nestled in the resort, it's a must visit if you're staying on property at thr Hyatt.

For dinner, it was on to nearby Japengo, a pretty, more upscale, open-air restaurant, where you can take in a view of the sunset as you chow down.

Luckily Chef Gevin Utrillo arranged a reservation for us at @Japengo. Price is $$$$ but if you love sushi, it’s totally worth the splurge.
