This is it, the quintessential Hawaiian cocktail experience that every visitor must have at least once: Dig your toes into the sand at the Barefoot Bar, enjoying live ukulele music and that delicious mai tai you’ve been dreaming of. Why I loved it: We’ve been here several times on past trips, and getting to eat with your feet in the sand never gets old. I’ve only ever had the fresh fish when I’m here, and LOVE that the menu is lab eled with tons of gluten-free options. Just be sure to let your server know that you’re dining gluten-free, so they’ll make any necessary adjustments to the dish.

Restaurants I recommend in Kaanapali include Hula Grill, Leilani’s, and Roy’s. Other restaurants I suggest on Maui’s west side include Kimos, Lahaina Grill, Penne Pasta, and Honokowai Okazuya. The restaurant has an atmosphere that is hard to match and a gorgeous location, right on the water’s edge at Kaanapali Beach. It features two patios, both offering stunning views of the Pacific and the islands of Molokai and Lanai. At Whalers Village you have Leilanis and Hula Grill (same owner as Kimos) which are both a lot of fun. Monkeypod Kitchen has a good bar and Mai Tai but we don't think much of the food. The Kaanapali Beach Hotel opened up a new restaurant a couple years ago called Huihui which is very good for both lunch and dinner and has ocean views.

Located in Ka’anapali on a beachfront location in Whalers Village, the Hula Grill offers great sunset views, food, and live music in a fun atmosphere. You can literally sit with your toes in the sand here, so the vacation vibe is strong. They have live music daily from 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm accompanied by hula from 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm.

Another great spot on the Kaanapali Beach boardwalk near Whaler’s Village shopping center. Their outdoor barefoot bar doesn’t have much for gluten free options, but their indoor dining menu has a few great dishes. The wait staff and managers are very accommodating and understanding of celiac and cross-contamination procedures.

A culinary gem in the heart of Lahaina, just a short drive from Kaanapali, Lahaina Grill is a recipient of the prestigious Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. The restaurant offers a refined dining experience with an emphasis on contemporary American cuisine, incorporating fresh, seasonal ingredients and innovative techniques.

The Sea Maui kiosk is situated between Leilani’s & Hula Grill along the Kaanapali Beach Walk at Whaler’s Village. Other West Maui whale-watching tours leave from the Mala Warf in Lahaina, just south of Kaanapali. This is located just north of the restricted area so rest assured that it’s accessible for recreational boat tours.

Here’s what I enjoyed: COCONUT SEAFOOD CHOWDER (lobster, shrimp, fresh fish, bok choy, shiitake mushrooms, peanuts, coconut cilantro broth) and WOOD GRILLED FISH (sauteed local vegetables, surfing goat cheese, aged balsamic, roasted red pepper romesco). I really can’t tell you which one to order. They were both excellent!

After out whale watching tour, we stumbled upon this place, right on the beach and decided to have a late lunch. My husband enjoyed his gluten free coconut seafood chowder which was packed with seafood. I'm both gluten free and vegan and didn't see much on the main menu, so I ordered veggie side dishes which were AMAZING!

Be sure to stop at the Hula Grill for some fish tacos and a Mai Tai, and enjoy the sunset from your table. There are also rentals for umbrellas and chairs from several places along the beach, and you can pick up snorkeling gear at The Snorkel Store, which is just 0.3 miles from Black Rock.

We’ve enjoyed Hula Grill and Monkeypod Kitchen, if you time it right you’ll have great views of the sunset. If you’re looking for a place to pick up and go I’d highly recommend the Fish Market, their fish tacos are one of the best I’ve had on the island and their portions are quite large.

There’s almost always a line outside Hula Grill — for good reason. It has a coveted place right on the beach. In fact, the outdoor tables and chairs are planted right in the sand with a stunning view of the ocean.

For lunch, head to Sangrita Grill & Cantina for Maui’s take on Mexican food, Leilani’s on the Beach or Hula Grill, which often have live music and a gorgeous view of Ka’anapali Beach.
