Reviews Summary

Wayfarer Bread & Pastry is a highly acclaimed bakery known for its exceptional croissants and sourdough. While many rave about the flaky pastries and artisanal bread, be prepared for potentially long lines and items selling out quickly, especially if you don't arrive early or pre-order. Despite the wait, the quality and unique flavors make it a worthwhile experience for most visitors.

"Highly recommend coming here early because there’s always a line but it moves quickly, so it’s not too bad. They always have fresh pastries, and most of them are really good. Their bread is also fantastic, especially the sourdough, definitely worth trying!

My favorite so far has been the cinnamon loaf-absolutely delicious. I wasn’t a big fan of the chocolate croissant though. As a chocolate lover, I felt it didn’t have enough chocolate, and the portion was a bit small.

Overall, this is a really solid bakery spot to check out if you’re ever in the area. Just don’t come too close to closing! if you show up two or three hours before they close, chances are 80% of the good stuff is already sold out. Definitely worth the early visit!"

Linh Mai

"If you’d told me I’d be standing in line for 35 minutes at 8am on a Sunday - for a croissant - I wouldn’t have believed you.

But I had to see what the hype was about. Every time I’d come before, they were already sold out, usually by noon or 1pm.

And oh wow! Those croissants were so worth it.
I tried the almond, the strawberry pistachio, and a scone… every bite was absolute perfection.

Insider tip: You can pre-order and skip the long wait with a separate pick-up line. I wish I’d known that before.

As for the atmosphere, I’d give it three stars. There’s not much to rate, it is not a cafe, so it is not applicable here, and the line is always so long. But the team working there is kind and helpful, which made the experience better."

Maria Mnatsakanova

"There will be a line and you will wait in it. It’s worth it. The croissants are so perfectly flaky and probably the best I’ve ever had. I’ve tried the sourdough bread, a sandwich, and 6 pastries and loved them all. The service was also great - I asked for recommendations and wasn’t rushed when choosing the pastries for my box. Highly, highly recommend!"

The Best Restaurants in San Diego

This charming bakery by the beach in La Jolla rivals the best bakeries in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Founder Crystal White, a former lead bread baker at San Francisco’s Tartine, sources the best ingredients from California, except the high-fat European style butter. Fruit from Chino Farms, organic flour from Central Milling in Petaluma, and organic milk from Clover Dairy in Sonoma are showcased in fruit-filled galettes, nutty multigrain loaves, and croissant flavors like the sweet and salty strawberry-pistachio, inspired in part by Parisian baker Pierre Hermé’s famed croissant Ispahan.

Since most of Comic-Con’s scheduled programming begins about 10 a.m., I’m sending early risers on a 30-minute journey north of the convention center to the San Diego area’s promised land for pastries. Wayfarer opens at 8:30 a.m., and there will be a line that looks daunting but usually moves steadily. The rewards for your patience begin with billowing croissants; strawberry-pistachio is a favorite but even standard variations like chocolate, almond or ham and cheese are exemplary.
