Reviews Summary

Din Tai Fung is celebrated for its world-class dumplings and meticulous preparation, with many diners praising the friendly service and vibrant atmosphere. While the food is generally highly regarded, some find the wait times to be exceptionally long, and a few reviews suggest that certain dishes may not live up to the extreme hype. Despite potential queues, many consider the experience and the quality of the signature dishes to be worth it.

"Went for lunch with a party of 3. The wait time can look daunting, but the restaurant is big with plenty of tables - and the waitlist process is easy! Put yourself on the waitlist before you even leave the house and by the time you get there, your table may be just about ready.
Hostess was very kind when we arrived to check in and offered to answer any questions we had as first-timers. The seating process was quick and easy, especially when you can look at the menu before seating and decide what you want.
Our server Cat was very friendly and accommodating. We were asked by both the host and server if it was our first time and if we wanted anything explained. It all looks very authentic and doesn’t seem to be a bad item on the menu. Everything we ordered was delicious!
I am gluten-free and found several dishes to order: greens, fried rice, cucumber salad, etc. The rest of my party was not gf and enjoyed all of the buns.
Definitely don’t skip on a beverage! I ordered matcha milk tea with boba and it wasn’t too sweet, and the boba was soft and delicious. Will definitely go back and recommend to friends!"

"The food is good, but not outstanding. The servers are friendly. The wait is incredibly long, and to be honest, not worth it.

Their crab xiaolongbao is really good, would recommend. The sweet and sour pork ribs are super flavorful, but the portion size is small. Overall, worth the experience, but I wouldn’t go back."

Alisha Ma

"My wife and I were in San Diego for a quick getaway and had identified Din Tai Fung as a place we wanted to hit based on reviews, and honestly, it was just okay. Even at 2pm the place was a madhouse, which set the expectations pretty high, but the food didn’t quite deliver.
• Hot & Sour Soup (Pork): Pretty standard—nothing that stood out.
• Crab & Kurobuta Pork Xiao Long Bao: Disappointing, especially given this is supposed to be their signature dish. We’ve had much better versions at traditional dim sum spots.
• Shrimp & Kurobuta Pork Spicy Wontons: Tasty, but nothing special
• Chocolate & Mochi Xiao Long Bao: This was the surprise hit of the afternoon! Unique, well-executed, and easily the highlight of the meal.

Service was solid and professional, but overall, the food just didn’t justify the wait or the hype. For me, this was a 3-star experience—glad we tried it once, but with all the options in the San Diego area probably won’t go back."

And at least third on the list of our favorites, if not in the bottom half. Their dumpling dough was arguably the best—perfectly elastic and thin, yet sturdy enough to contain the soupy payload. The problem is there simply isn’t much soup in these dumplings, just a small thimble of just-okay broth.
