The French Market is the first and only French crêpe restaurant in Knoxville. Winner of the best French restaurant award in 2014 and a runner-up every year between 2009 and 2013 in the best breakfast and brunch categories of the Metro Pulse Best of Knoxville Awards, The French Market is located on Gay Street in the downtown area of Knoxville. The restaurant has also won TripAdvisor certificates of excellent in 2014 and 2013 for consistently excellent food and reviews from customers.

Of course, there are my other tried-and-true favorites that I didn’t even have time to stop by on this visit: The French Market Crêperie for breakfast, The Tomato Head for lunch, Coolato Gelato for a sweet treat, Sunspot for dinner, Downtown Grill & Brewery or Barley’s for drinks, Crown & Goose for a pint. Tupelo Honey Café is good, too, but I’ve stopped going there with all the new additions to downtown. And all those other newer places like the Public House that I still didn’t have a chance to visit due to the ice storm stopping the city dead in its tracks.

The Market Square Farmers Market is an open-air farmers market managed by Nourish Knoxville and held every Wednesday and Saturday, May through mid-November on Market Square in downtown Knoxville. Everything at the Market Square Farmers Market is grown, raised, and/or made by our vendors within a 150-mile radius of Knoxville, Tennessee. Products vary by season and include fresh fruits & vegetables, eggs, honey, pasture-raised meats, edible & ornamental plants, cut flowers, bread & baked goods, jams & jellies, coffee, artisan crafts, and more!

But locals (everyone I met was friendly and still tolerates tourists) say in the last several years Knoxville has taken off, becoming a city that supports local artists, cherishes its history, is bringing people downtown to live and offering creative food and drink that I’d love to see restaurants offering in Sarasota and Manatee. You can feel the energy in this up-and-coming city that’s a mix of artists, beer and whiskey makers, innovative chefs, college students and entrepreneurs. You can also feel its proud Appalachian roots.

Do you ever have those moments when you step in somewhere and think, “Wow, I feel like I’m not in Knoxville.” The Scruffy City definitely has its charm, but you will find a different sort of rustic here. Black & white photos of Paris adorn the sky blue walls and a chandelier hangs from the ceiling, creating a bright atmosphere that transports you to the land of crepe; the entire reason why I’m here. This creperie has two delicious gluten-friendly batters to choose from: buckwheat and a dedicated gluten-free.

Allen and Susan Tate have been living in Paris on and off for years and it wasn’t until they decided to open their French Market Crêperie in 2008 that they finally planted their roots. Wanting to share their love of French cuisine with others, these two created the first and only authentic French crêpe restaurant for those who love a bit of sweets along with their savory taste. Get their Grilled Cheese crêpe, Smoked Salmon crêpe, or go with simple and get the Traditional Plain crêpe.

On our final morning in Knoxville, we had several options for breakfast—Makers donuts and Status Dough being two worthy contenders (and spots you absolutely must try if you have a sweet tooth), in addition to my regular, tried-and-true haunt, Tomato Head—but I can never resist the crepes at French Market, which has relocated from Gay Street to the other side of the square and, ultimately, won out in a battle of the breakfast foods. I still don’t regret that decision one bit!

We've had the pleasure of visiting both the downtown Knoxville and Farragut locations of The French Market Creperie for brunch, and every visit has been a delightful experience. The consistency in the quality of both food and service is something to commend. One of our all-time favorite dishes is the roast beef & Swiss on a croissant - the horseradish gives it that extra kick that makes it an unforgettable sandwich.

You'll think you stepped into Paris when you enter The French Market, an utterly charming European-style crêperie. There's plenty of space inside, including an upstairs loft to meet friends, co-workers, and classmates for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or an afternoon craft cappuccino from their espresso bar. The outside patio is also a wonderful space to waste away an afternoon.

French Market The French Market has two locations, one downtown and the other in Farragut. Expect to find crepes of both the sweet and savory variety. Most of their crepes are made with flour imported from France, but they have an excellent buckwheat flour that is naturally gluten free and a gluten free batter – both made on separate griddles so you can eat without worry.

I'll add Taj for Indian, La Costa for fusion gourmet, The Bistro for seasonal eclectic gourmet, New Orleans on the River in Sevierville for creole, Dead End BBQ for, well, BBQ, and Taste of Thai for Thai. BBQ in Knoxville is most closely related to the western Carolina style, ie a tomato/vinegar sauce that is not very sweet. JMT appears to be a Memphis dry-style fan.

At Knoxville’s first and only authentic French crepe restaurant, you’ll savor the sweet flavors, among them caramel with whipped cream, blueberries and lemon curd, Bavarian cream and, of course, crepes Suzette. For the not-so-sweet tooth, you’ll find classic grilled cheese and other sandwiches, omelets, croissants. The restaurant is as cozy and warm as a Paris café.

The French Market Crêperie is Knoxville’s first and only authentic French crêpe restaurant. With a cozy atmosphere and lots of places to sit, it is a great place for a quick bite to eat or a simple cup of coffee. The Downtown location is only a short five minute drive from campus or a brisk 20 minute walk, if you’re feeling up for it.

You can satisfy your sweet cravings at the French Market Creperie, for sure. But they don’t just serve delectable Nutella crepes the way they do on the streets of Paris. The French Market Creperie also offers a selection of savory crepes that’ll make you trade your hand-eating sandwich habits to that of fork and knife use.

Sometimes you’re just not in the mood for a giant meal, which is why The French Market Creperie Downtown is a fabulous option. After tasting the pancakes at The French Market Creperie Downtown in Knoxville, I can confidently say that they are absolutely delicious. The pancakes were fluffy, light, and bursting with flavor. Their wide range of toppings and fillings made for a unique and scrumptious pancake experience.

You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a Parisian bistro when you enter this downtown restaurant, but that’s not why there’s a line of people at the counter. It’s the crepes that make this place truly special. Made with flour imported from France, you can choose from sweet or savory options.

We totally lucked out with beautiful weather during our stay in Knoxville and took advantage of outdoor dining as often as possible, including at The French Market. Parking is easy, depending on day and time, at metered parking along the street in front of the restaurant.
