Start with Toasted Sourdough

Begin your meal with toasted sourdough, perhaps with olive oil and Calabrian peppers, before pizzas.

Consider the Back Room

The back room is recommended for larger groups to avoid being too loud for other diners.

Reviews Summary

Diners rave about A Dopo Sourdough Pizza for its exceptional wood-fired sourdough pizzas with creative flavor combinations and a fantastic crust. The homemade gelato is a highly recommended dessert, and the 'trust fall' experience offers a unique way to dine. While the ambiance is often described as lively and family-friendly, some reviews note that the middle of the pizza can be a bit floppy.

"I love the vibe in here and always enjoy the pizza when i come. It is hot and fresh and I enjoy the unique flavor pairings they come up with seasonally. the best way to do it is a trust call which comes with pizza, wine, an appetizer, and gelato. Reservations aren’t always easy to come by so keep your eyes peeled!"

Jolee Gasque

"Visiting from Chicago, this pizza was pretty good. Loved the crust taste and softness, but the middle parts of our pizza on the Sofia and pizzicletta was a bit floppy and wet. The calabrese was my favorite, the chili oil was such a nice added touch. The service was excellent and server was so friendly. The arugula salad was so delicious and we loved the homemade gelatos (pistachio and fruity pebble) For Knoxville, definitely one of the best pizza options."

Graham

"This is one of the best pizza restaurants in the city. I enjoy going here with friends, and having a drink. They offer a wide variety of pizzas, wines, and mini ice creams. The flavors are what captivate you. The pizzas are so well made their sauces are infused perfectly with the them . It’s incredibly tasty!

I would definitely make a reservation as they are usually always busy. The staff are amazingly helpful and attentive. The back room is probably my favorite since we usually go in a big crowd, and this way we’re not too loud!

If I could order from here every day, I would. Highly recommend coming here! 🍕🫠😋"

Best Restaurants In Knoxville, TN

Though Pizza Palace will always hold a special place in locals' hearts, there's always room for a puffed sourdough pie from Brian Strutz at A Dopo. The former paint store embodies everything that defines Knoxville's restaurant scene at the moment: The prep table was donated by yet another chef from Blackberry Farm, the lights designed by a firm next door and the milk for house-made gelato sourced from—you guessed it—Cruze Farm. More fitting is A Dopo's name, which translates to "see you later"—a nod to the people returning back for another one of Strutz's pies, and perhaps also to the chefs who'll eventually return home to grow their Knoxville roots.

Step just outside the square and you’ll be on Gay Street, whose history dates back to the founding of the state of Tennessee in 1796. As the city’s first paved road, a stroll down the lane reveals historical theaters such as The Bijou and Tennessee Theatre (where I last saw John Prine play), art galleries, restaurants, and more. As a kid, I’d ravaged the old-fashioned candy barrels for Zotz and Bit-O-Honey candies at Mast General Store, a retail landmark since 1898 where you can truly find anything and everything.

In fact, Karl Worley, chef and owner of Biscuit Love, who makes some of the South’s most delicious biscuits and pizza, says it’s “one of the best pizzas in the United States.” The housemade mozzarella with pistachios and basil, served with warm sourdough bread, is a must to start.

But there’s also something special about the intimate, candlelit space that keeps people coming back. Though it’s incredibly popular, the restaurant seems almost exclusive.
