It’s been a challenging year for this Katy Asian Town Malaysian spot, with the untimely passing of innovative chef-owner Alex Au-Yueng. The much-loved chef would have savored the warm vibe on an autumn Friday night, with Houstonians of every stripe gathered under the cheeky neon night-market signs for curry and noodles and all manner of stir-fries. Au-Yeung’s young lieutenants, Kevin Lee and Marvin He, have pressed ahead with their mentor’s vision for a second location in The Woodlands, and they’ve kept the ship steady in Katy.

This standout, helmed by James Beard Award semi-finalist chef Alex Au-Yeung, reels in visitors from across the city for its swoon-worthy Malaysian street eats, but it also has five classic styles of dim sum on the menu; among them are crystal prawn dumplings, steamed barbecue pork buns and sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf. Spring for the whole enchilada, aka Phat’s dim sum platter, and try all five for $20. As a bonus, Phat’s highly anticipated Woodlands location opens this spring, giving Houstonians another place to indulge.

Phat Eatery in The Woodlands was already in the works when its beloved chef-owner Alex Au-Yeung tragically passed away in March, months before he could see the final version come to fruition. The sizable 8,000-square-foot space still serves the Malaysian food that made the original location popular, including beef rendang, satay skewers, stir-fried noodles, and sizzling tofu. Other items, like Cantonese-style barbecue and an expanded dim sum menu, will also be available at the new Phat Eatery.

I can find noodles to fulfill just about any craving when it hits: Vietnamese pho dac biet at Pho Dien; Japanese udon at Ishin Udon; Cantonese dry beef chow fun noodles at House of Bowls; Malaysian char kway teo at Phat Eatery in Katy; and so on.
