Take the detour to Kailua, where you’ll find popular breakfast and lunch spots Kalapawai Market and Boots & Kimo’s. Step out onto the shores of the often Instagrammed Kailua and Lanikai Beaches, before taking the scenic route to the North Shore on Kamehameha Highway. On the way, you’ll pass Kaneohe Bay, Waiahole Poi Factory (stop here for Hawaiian plate lunches), Kualoa Ranch and a natural landmark known as Crouching Lion. You'll see coastal views of beaches and undeveloped valleys before entering Laie, where the Polynesian Cultural Center and Mormon Temple are located.

At the locally owned and family-operated Hawaii restaurant Boots & Kimo’s Homestyle Kitchen, pancakes aren’t just pancakes. Plump and moist, banana, blueberry or plain, the stack of two or three pancakes is absolutely smothered in a creamy macadamia nut sauce — a thick white layer completely covering the pancakes underneath — and sprinkled with a fair helping of chopped macadamia nuts on top.

Located within the Enchanted Lake Shopping Center, Boots & Kimo’s is known for its signature banana pancakes with macadamia nut sauce. This eatery is a bit far from the main hub of Honolulu, but the food is so delicious that it’s definitely worth going out of the way. The place is pretty small with limited seating, so make sure you arrive early to grab a spot!

I’m willing to bet that over half of their business comes from their famous stack of banana pancakes with a special macadamia syrup on top. If you're in for something savory, try the local favorite Pulehu Ribs with fried rice for a breakfast that just may last you till dinner!. It's worth the half hour drive over the Pali Hwy to the downtown area of Kailua!

The popular eatery serves up authentic Hawaiian fare and is especially popular for their onolicious breakfast. The sugar-cured crispy bacon and Maui Portuguese sausage are delicious.

We came to this diner on a whim as we were meeting up with some friends in the area and they suggested this. This seemed to a local favorite as well as a tourist destination. At noon, there was an 1.5 hour wait, and the outside patio was packed with waiting customers despite the light sprinkle that day.

Boots and Kimo’s is famous for its pancakes with macadamia nut sauce (or go one step further and get the banana pancakes with mac nut sauce). They also serve other delicious breakfast items and plate lunches. If I can give you any tip, get here as early as possible or be prepared to wait in line.

If your friends decide to splurge, Hoku's at the Kahala Resort is really good, but $$$, as is Roy's in Hawaii Kai. For Japanese, Imanas Tei on King has great sushi and ippin ryori, as well as a nice sake list. Sushi Sasabune has excellent sushi, but be warned, that's all they have.
