On the docks at Kona's sleepy harbor, this open-air restaurant is an authentic place to grab a beer and a bite after a long day of fishing, beach-going, or diving. The venue is nothing fancy, but it's one of the best spots in Kona for fresh-fish sandwiches, a variety of fried fish-and-chip combos, and even burgers. Frosty 18-ounce schooners of Kona Brewing Co. ale cannot be beat price-wise anywhere on the island, either.

Locals and visitors in the know head to Harbor House Kona for its harbor views and menu that covers everything from shrimp shumai and fish and chips, to a grilled fish sandwich and fried oysters. Located in Honokohau Harbor, the open-air eatery boasts great views and is great spot to grab lunch after a morning of scuba diving with Kona Diving Company (the operators’ boat slip is just a few minutes’ walk from the eatery) or watching turtles at neighboring Kalolo-Honokōhau National Historical Park.

I love the straightforward fresh fish sandwich (ahi!) at the Harbor House at Honokauhau Harbor (and the setting), but be aware that the fish and chips there is frozen cod, so thumbs down on that item. For fish and chips, I recommend the back, outside seating area of Kailua-Kona's Quinn's Almost by the Sea - they're made with fresh ono, and the service is really sweet. I also love Umeke's for fresh fish.
