A former park in the middle of downtown Juneau has been transformed into a vibrant outdoor food court thanks to Deckhand Dave, a commercial fisherman who has acquired a loyal local following for his foodtruck-prepared rockfish and halibut tacos. The backyard patio atmosphere includes tents, heat lamps, firepits, and a ship-shaped bar. If fish tacos aren't your thing, visit Dave's neighbor, the Crepe Escape.

For a contemporary experience, munch on tacos filled with sustainably caught fish from Deckhand Dave’s food truck, crack open a steamy bucket of Alaskan king crab at Tracy's King Crab Shack, both situated along the main wharf, or head to Bocca al Lupo in downtown Juneau for handmade pastas and rustic, wood-fired pizzas with a local Alaskan twist.

Deckhand Dave’s serves up salmon, rock fish, and halibut fish tacos that are fresh and zesty with a punch of heat, if you opt for a bit of spice that is. (The salmon and halibut are fried, but if that doesn’t tickle your fancy, the charred rock fish hits the spot.) They are topped with pico de gallo, cabbage, cilantro, and sauce, and pair perfectly with an Alaskan beer on a hot sunny day. You can snag one ala carte for $5ish, an order of 3, or, my personal recommendation, get the 3 fish sampler for $14.99. It’s one of my favorite places to eat in Juneau, and one that shouldn’t be missed.

In each Alaskan city that I’ve visited, I usually discover one place I just can’t get enough of, and I call it “Best in Show.” In Juneau, that place is Deckhand Dave’s, which I can’t not stop by when I’m in town. Their fish tacos are absolutely fantastic, and the location – with other businesses all in a food park – is great fun. After having tried all of their fish tacos, I can confidently say that the blackened rockfish ones are best – but if you’re making your first visit, give the fish taco sampler a try first to find your own favorite, then order more of the ones you love.

After our late afternoon hike at Mount Roberts, we walked back toward our hotel and stopped at Deckhand Dave’s Fish Tacos where they have a lively gathering of food trucks surrounding a deck with lights, tables and benches and music. While there were many choices there, none were vegan (except the bar). In retrospect, I should have gotten something to go from several selections at Devil’s Club Brewing across the street.

The menu is seasonal and features salmon, rockfish, and halibut, all of which are caught fresh from the nearby waters and some of the best fish tacos I have ever had anywhere. The fish is then grilled to perfection and served on a warm tortilla with a variety of delicious toppings.

Serving seasonally fresh fish daily, this polished silver food truck cooks up fish so flavorful you’ll be plotting your return before you’re even done eating. Even if it doesn’t go with anything you’ve ordered, get a side of the tartar sauce—it’s so yummy, you’ll be dipping your fork (or finger) in it like it’s some kind of side dish.

The fish tacos and fish and chips are fantastic at Deckhand Dave’s, and you’ll enjoy the convenience of a kids menu. Enjoy looking at the many photos of commercial fishing boats from all over Alaska posted throughout the restaurant and on the tables. You’ll have something to talk about and look at while dining out with your children.

The outdoor eatery also recently launched a champagne oyster bar in the same lot. It’s worth noting that Deckhand Dave’s does close for the winter season.

A local favorite known for some of the tastiest food in town. Deckhand Dave’s serves up amazing rockfish tacos, salmon tater tots, and beer-battered Alaskan halibut straight from a food truck in the summer. The friendly staff and fresh Alaska seafood are always direct from the source and can’t get any fresher.

Undoubtedly, the busiest food truck at this location is Deckhand Dave’s, and for good reason. Deckhand Daves has quickly become our go-to spot for fish tacos in Juneau. Like Tracy’s, expect a long line at lunchtime, but their tacos are worth the wait.

Being from Texas, I’ve had a taco or two hundred in my life. I especially love fish tacos and it’s my go to when I see it on a menu. So imagine my delight when I saw that there is a fish taco truck right next to my hotel.
