The building in which it is housed dates back a century earlier to 1880 and still has many of the original features, porch, columns, and tall windows with shutters. It’s not far from the Old Court House Museum and the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation.

We finished the morning tour of Vicksburg National Military Park just before lunch and headed to Walnut Hills Restaurant. I had heard rumors about their Round Table, where the food is served boarding house-style on a revolving lazy Susan, but ultimately I decided I was not that hungry and settled for a Blue Plate special of fried chicken, yellow squash, creamed corn, cole slaw, and sweet iced tea. Alas, there was no room in my belly for the peanut butter cake in the refrigerated display case, but I’m counting on it for my next visit.

With the help of the city's Convention and Visitors Bureau, I was directed to Walnut Hills, a once gracious 19th-century cottage that has become a popular family-style restaurant a few blocks from the Old Court House. As I stepped through the screened doorway off the front porch, a hostess whisked me into what once must have been a very fashionable dining room. There she seated me at a large round table with perhaps nine or 10 other people, the locals mingling with tourists.

Walnut Hills Restaurant, located on Adams Street in a house originally built in 1880, made the list of “1,000 Places to See Before You Die.” The fried chicken served at Walnut Hills is consistently voted the best in Mississippi and the housemade cakes and pies are swoon-worthy. Back in town, Walnut Hills Restaurant is a gem, one of those downhome Southern spots with a big old lazy Susan in the center of every table. Get the fried chicken, period. It’s some of the best you’ll ever have, but the shrimp and grits and fried catfish are tough to ignore.

The woman at the Vicksburg Tourism office pointed us to this restaurant, saying that it was featured in the book 1,000 Places to See Before You Die. After having gone to Walnut Hills Restaurant for lunch, I can only say that I hope to hell the other 999 places are better.

Walnut Hills restaurant is on the fancier end of the spectrum — the Jukin' tamales, fried green tomatoes and chocolate cake are delightful — though its "Southern Plantation Cuisine" tagline feels just a touch jarring in this day and age.

My tour group had heard good things about the food at Walnut Hills. I wanted a quick dinner, so an early dinner was in order. Ordering the crab bisque to start, I included a shrimp Po-Boy with coleslaw to round out my meal.

When the Americans took possession in 1798, they changed the name to Walnut Hills. A sprawling community developed which officially incorporated in 1825 as Vicksburg. It was named after Newitt Vick, a Methodist minister.
