Reviews Summary

Northstar Public House is lauded for its creative, farm-to-table comfort food with extensive gluten-free options, particularly the fish and chips and burgers. Diners praise the unique flavors and cozy atmosphere. However, some reviews mention significant wait times for food and checks, even when not busy, and occasional inconsistencies in flavor or service for larger parties.

"This vegetarian leaning restaurant serves up some delicious dishes, including some with animal protein. I selected the pork and mushroom special. The pork was slowly roasted with spices and herbs. There were several types of herbs flavoring the mushrooms. Blood orange margarita was a great accompaniment. Appetizer was squash fritters with a delicious sauce. We also tried the squash curry and yum, definitely worth trying. This is a must try restaurant."

"This was our first restaurant during a 4 night visit to Ithaca and area. I say that because we wanted to return later but unfortunately it was closed for two nights for a private event. My wife is celiac and she ordered the fish and chips with sides of mac and cheese and fries. She found the order plentiful and excellent. The fish was lightly breaded, properly cooked, and VERY tasty. The fries were excellent and the mac and cheese also tasty. It was a real treat for a celiac to be able to order delicious gluten-free fish and chips. I ordered the blackened fish and grits and it too was delicious and plentiful. Unfortunately, I gave this restaurant 4* because of the very long wait for our meals to be delivered and then for the bill to arrive later. And this despite the fact that the place was less than half full. However, the three staff were all moving very quickly and our server was quite helpful when we placed our order. So I suspect that maybe the restaurant was short-staffed that day or unable to hire sufficient staff. In any case, even with the wait we were willing to return if we could."

"Love, love, love this place! Can't wait to come back when it's warmer and we can sit outside. There's lots of Gluten-free and locally sourced options. I would say the only negative was music was kind of loud for a casual dining experience, so perhaps they could turn that down so people can converse more. The other thing was the tables were a little small for all the delicious food we wanted to order lol.
We had the Gluten-free Mac n cheese which had an exquisitely creamy cheese sauce with a nice sharpness to it. The Gluten-free fish was crispy and moist inside (we switched out the fries or rather "chips" to side of coconut rice) which was a nice contrast so that it wasn't a completely fried plate. Also had the locally sourced wings, which were HUGE. We recommend the Baltimore style wings."

The 20 Best Restaurants in Ithaca, New York

This Fall Creek favorite prides itself for using as many local ingredients as possible and crafting a diverse menu for gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan eaters alike. But there are still plenty of options for staunch carnivores, like the whole jerk chicken wings, beer-battered fish and chips and the roasted garlic burger, made with beef from New York-based Autumn’s Harvest Farm. Plant-based eaters will adore the Bounty Bowl (coconut rice, tamari-braised greens and pickled veggies), house curry (local butternut squash, potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli and onion in red curry sauce) and crispy fried Ithaca Soy tofu wings, complete with house vegan blue cheese.

Black-Owned Businesses in Ithaca

The locally-focused farm restaurant grew out of the friendship of three men who go way back: As toddlers, Jed Ashton and singer Elliot Martin ran together through the Stewart Park sprinklers, and as college students, some 30 years ago, they met saxophonist Lee Hamilton in Boston. Once back in Ithaca, the friends knew exactly what they wanted to add to the city’s going-out scene: a diverse, inclusive gathering place for families, aimed at the community. Their vision came alive in 2009, named for the celestial body that “has always been a guiding light for African Americans since the time our ancestors were brought here against their will,” Ashton explains.

Best of Ithaca 2017: For first dates to tasty takeout, the best chow in town | Best Of Ithaca

Our restaurant critic Peggy Haine paid Northstar a visit last year: It was the burgers that drew our attention. We dug into the huge roasted garlic burger (stoutly standing under melted cheddar, greens, tomato, onion, and garlic aioli on a brioche-type roll) served with a side of Caesar salad, and the “Sorrel, I’m not Sorrel” burger (Autumn’s Harvest ground beef, tart sorrel pesto, Lively Run feta, & garlic aioli on a house-made brioche bun with parmesan potato wedges), both done perfectly medium rare as ordered, totally juicy, and too big to fit into a normal mouth without some serious squushing. Setting the tomato slices aside for later helped.

3 ways to pair Ithaca's outdoors with great food

Or tucked away down the hill in the quiet and unassuming Fall Creek neighborhood is Northstar with its eclectic and funky parade of flavors. The pub is not afraid to say and serve kale Caesar (though not before grilling), add extra char to Arctic char or make wings of tofu. All this, and the garlic burger is still the most popular item.
