Reviews Summary

Diners praise Xochi for its authentic Oaxacan cuisine, particularly the flavorful moles and creative cocktails. The attentive service is frequently highlighted, with specific servers receiving commendations. However, some guests find the dishes excessively spicy for their personal preference, and one review noted a disappointing brunch buffet experience.

"I love the food here! Brought my sister and nephew to try it and they also fell in love!
The moles are all so flavorful and tasty!
My favorite part was the staff! William as our server! Super professional and attentive! When I come back I always ask for him! When he is not available I ask for Juan!
I ate the taquitos dorados and cooked oysters! For main dish the barbacoa! All a must!
Thank you Xochi! Everything was awesome!"

Ana Ocampo

"Absolutely stunning food in a laid-back setting. Everything mole is worth getting, but the goat tacos and the seared scallops were pretty much perfect. Great cocktails too. Special shout out to Ulises, who made the evening a surprisingly space-themed joy."

Robin Andrews

"I had a great time here. I asked the server for some recommendations for a variety of flavours and they did not disappoint.

The robalo was raw striped bass served with a creamy avocado and a plantain tostada. Presentation was fantastic and the flavor was delicious.

The Memel was toasted masa pancake with roasted pork and an assortment of vegetables and cheese. My mouth was so happy with every bite.

The Pulpo, grilled octopus with purple potatoes and green chorizo was out of this world. The octopus was so tender and the chorizo balanced flavour in very unique ways.

The cocktails and sangria were great too."

Best Mexican Restaurants in Houston: Good Mexican Food to Order Now

The complex flavors of Oaxaca are on full display at this hotel hotspot from chef Huge Ortega and restaurateur Tracy Vaught. Set in Downtown’s gorgeous Marriott Marquis (yes, the one with the Texas-shaped lazy river), you don’t have to book a room to experience Ortega’s sensational landscape of moles—Tamal de Pollo con Mole Negro (chicken tamales in an earthy black elixir), Camarones en Mole Verde (a zippy green number engulfing head-on shrimp), and Costillas De Puerco en Mole Chicatana (pork ribs with ant mole), plus traditional dishes from Tlayudas (Oaxacan-style pizza) to Moletes (a kind of open-faced sandwich). How to book: Reserve via SevenRooms.

A Guide to Houston's Best Restaurants

For dinner, I went to Xochi, where James Beard Award–winning chef Hugo Ortega displays his Oaxacan heritage in dishes like fried grasshoppers with flying ants and tlayudas — crisp, gently fried tortillas topped with chicken, steak, or mushrooms. Ortega and his wife also operate Hugo’s, which features traditional dishes from across Mexico, in the Montrose neighborhood.

The 14 best Mexican restaurants in Houston

Chef Hugo Ortega turns his focus to Oaxacan fare at this stunner on the bottom floor of downtown's Marriott Marquis, its name a nod to Xochitl (the Goddess of the Flowers). At Xochi, the region's indigenous flavors bloom via an array of moles and masa. Dine on head-on shrimp in green mole or braised beef cheeks in mole pasilla, chorizo- and potato-stuffed molotes (masa pancakes) with a don't-knock-it-'til-you-try-it chapulin garnish (yep, that's grasshopper), and desserts from corn custard ice cream to Oaxacan hot chocolate, foamed tableside and served with churros for dipping.
