Reviews Summary

Street to Kitchen is celebrated for its bold, authentic Thai street food and the culinary artistry of James Beard Award-winning Chef Benchawan Jabthong Painter. While many praise the intense spice levels and unique flavors, some diners found the spice to be overwhelming even when requested mild. The mango sticky rice and creative cocktails are consistently highlighted as exceptional. Reddit+1[^M4]

"A cute place for a date night or gathering with friends! We have been wanting to come here and Street to Kitchen did not disappoint us.

First of all, it is SPICY, the authentic Thai way. So don’t order anything more than mild spicy if you’re not sure how spicy you can handle. And you don’t want to be in pain for the next two days. My favorite appetizers are the papaya salad (refreshing!) and the rice cakes. The rice cake was not what we expected but surprisingly tasty. The sweetness of the rice cake also balances out the spice of other dishes.

The fried rice and the curry dish were both really good. We enjoyed it a lot. The drunken noodles were okay, a little too greasy in my opinion but the texture was great. I liked how some pieces of the rice noodles were intentionally burned to provide some crispy texture.

Lastly, the drinks were definitely the highlight of our evening. The Thai tea is a must try- very tasty and just like your regular Thai tea with a spike. Our server was amazing. He was very attentive and gave us a lot of recommendations. Will definitely revisit!"

"Always a pleasant time coming to eat here. Food is always good. Service is always great. I love it. Spice levels are on point. So be careful if you can handle that spice. Try to make a reservation in advance if you can usually pretty easy to do and do NOT skip on mango sticky rice."

"We were really excited to try this restaurant, and it usually gets packed over the weekends. However, we managed to get a spot at the bar and the good thing was at the bar has full Services. We ordered a cocktails, which were great, and as far as the food was concerned, despite the fact that we requested mild to medium spice. It was crazy because our food was really really spicy, and this is coming from somebody who can handle spice. It felt like our food had way too much pepper, or something got lost in translation, and they thought that we wanted a lot more spice than what we had intended for our meal. Anyway, given the busyness at the restaurant, and how late we were and getting our food to begin with. We just kind of stuck with it. Overall, it’s cute. Little spot. Maybe we will give it a shot another time, but for now I’m taking a break from it."

Now in its second, larger location in the East End, Street To Kitchen consistently delivers unparalleled flavor, a high ratio of drapery to tables, and aloof but knowledgeable service that kind of makes you hope you impress the staff by the end of the meal. Sticking to the everyday menu won’t ever disappoint, but don’t pass up on any suggested specials, and always (always) get a mango sticky rice when you can.

What an arc for chef Benchawan Jabthong Painter, who opened a tiny, drive-thru Thai takeaway in our first pandemic summer, went on to gain a devoted dine-in following, and this year won a coveted James Beard Award for Best Chef Texas. Even with subsequent festival and event travel — and although she and her husband and business partner, Graham Painter, took on an ambitious two-night-a-week project at the Bay Area’s Prsrv — their homey East End spot still delivers. Chef G, as she is called, has beefed up her kitchen staff and trained them to deliver the dynamic, exceptionally well-balanced dishes she’s known for.

Located in the East End, Street to Kitchen’s “unapologetic” Thai menu focuses on authentic Thai cuisine, with key ingredients, such as the restaurant’s curry paste, made from scratch in-house. Aside from classic noodle dishes and curries, Street to Kitchen specializes in crispy Thai fried chicken, drunken noodles, garlic chive pancakes, and a mango sticky rice that knocks the competition out of the park. The restaurant is the brainchild of Benchawan Jabthong Painter, a Thailand native who grew up cooking in her family’s restaurant as a child.
