A true hidden gem in Houston, today I went and explored Pondicheri which happens to be an Indian cafe. Here’s what I got: Pav bahji kolache: a vegetable kolache. I ate ALL of it! Hint of spicy, can taste the fresh herbs, super freshly made, bread was light, not a heavy pastry at all. Mawa cake: Not too sweet which I love because I don’t like things that are overly sweet, hint of pistachio and nut...

Reviews Summary

Diners praise Pondicheri for its unique Indian fusion cuisine and creative brunch options, highlighting the delicious flavors and vibrant atmosphere. While many dishes are well-received, some find the execution can be hit or miss depending on the specific order. The Bake Lab is a particular favorite for its inventive desserts. Note: one review mentioned concerns about the restaurant being closed, though other sources indicate it is open.

"I ate there yesterday during a car show. The weather happened to be perfect to sit outside. The staff was very friendly. I never tried the dish I ordered for breakfast, so I was pleasantly surprised of the combination of flavors used in my wrap. My coffee and wrap were $15. I really recommend this place. plenty of indoor and outdoor seating."

Silvia Moreno

"Overall, a good option to try something new in the Indian food space! While the ambience and service were excellent, the food is quite dependent on the dish you order. It could be hit or miss. For example, the lamb dishes were very good (lamb puff, lamb chops). But the Butter Chicken was a miss for me (it tasted more like a Chicken Curry). Maybe ordering a North Indian dish in a restaurant named "Pondicheri" wasn't the best idea! The Texan Thali was a good option to try several dishes in reasonable portions. I appreciated that I was able to substitute the pork product for another item - and kudos to our server for paying particular attention to the dietary restrictions! The chicken kebabs were decent but perhaps getting a crab dish or dosa would have been better. I'd say, paired with good service and ambience, the place and its offerings intrigued me enough to warrant a return visit to try more of the menu! Parking is available in the adjoining garage."

Sim M

"They have some unique dishes, and I got to try some; they were satisfying. The atmosphere and the location of this restaurant are wonderful.

If you are craving authentic Indian food, then you might not want to come here, although they have some authentic dishes.

But if you want something unique with an Indian touch, then you must try it."

With a modern counter-service Indian restaurant on the first floor and a bake lab and shop upstairs, Pondicheri offers a unique experience to sample everything from chaat ($14) and frankies ($16) to chai pie ($10). In the restaurant, James Beard Award-nominated chef and cookbook author, Anita Jaisinghani does staples like butter chicken ($22) and masala dosa ($16) well, but she also takes a non-traditional approach with dishes like the green dosa ($18) stuffed with sauteed greens, in lieu of potatoes, and the protein-heavy Texan thali ($32). The bake lab and shop is also counter service, and has a relaxed, loungey atmosphere, fit for pairing Sindhi laddu with assam tea or masala milk.

Anita Jaisinghani’s fast-casual café has been an unqualified hit since day one, offering Gulf Coast–Indian fusion fare at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Sure, an order of saag paneer and butter chicken might be the most basic of Indian food orders (blame one small, picky 3-year-old), but the punchy creaminess of the former and the gentle heat of the latter prove that even with traditional everyday dishes, Jaisinghani is a cut above the rest. If you're ordering to-go, Pondicheri has a separate entrance and exit, and markers on the floor make social distancing a breeze.
