What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Nami Kaze Hawaii garners significant praise for its innovative Hawaiian-Japanese fusion cuisine and beautiful presentation, particularly highlighting brunch offerings like the honey walnut shrimp waffle and flavorful small plates. While many rave about the exceptional taste, quality, and attentive service, some diners note a lack of windows or views, and occasional inconsistencies in certain dishes or dessert quality. Overall, it's celebrated as a unique and delicious dining experience.
"A late review I confess, but that just means I've had more time to reflect and I've been thinking very fondly of this place! We hit the appetizers hard (I didn't try the uli tots but heard good things) I can confirm however this place is doing some wonderful things with eggplant. The marinated eggplant was so stupid good, custardy eggplant sitting pretty in a great marinade, with a hearty pile of chilled radish atop. Dare I say a celebration of the vegetable. We had to try the roasted eggplant too obviously and it was nice and warm with tomato miso and puffed rice, very smartly put together and executed fantabulously.
The beet salad was good but not as exciting, granted I've had many a beet salad in my life and at this point they tend to blur together. I've also had many a chawanmushi and generally found it underwhelming but this fine place gave me the first chawanmushi I've loved. They were generous with the lobster which scored some easy points but even beyond that it was a beautiful thing, the radish and greens kept it interesting, egg was egging. I was a big fan of the mix summer roll too, very fresh and bright with that holy peanut sauce LORD one of mankind's greatest inventions really.
For mains we split some sushi, had the amber jacked, tsunami and pika-chuna roll and again they were all delightful, thoughtfully done, hit the spot. The good times continued into dessert. I don't know what this lemon thing was and it was slightly too cold (messed the texture a little) but it tasted like heaven so none of us really cared. The matcha cheesecake paired well with it there was however I think a mix up because there was supposed to be cream on top and it was just straight up blue cheese, the only error of the night and not one that really put us off in the slightest because overall! The food was damn good and the service was even better. Highly recommend. Don't forget to try the eggplant"

"Nice restaurant, I wish it had windows or some type of view to the harbor. The food was okay. Nothing bad but nothing amazing, especially for the price. We had a few different things. I think the appetizers - eggplant and Brussels sprouts were my favorite. The steak was good. The pork belly was meh."

"This was my second time visiting this restaurant. And, it did not disappoint. We sat at the kitchen counter, which was super fun. We got to see the chefs in action and watch them. Send out the food on the side part of the kitchen counter. We even got to be in front of Chef. The food was amazing and the service was great. Our server, Eric, was helpful and always filled our water glass. This is a great place to do family style and order a bunch of different things to try."

Best Restaurants in Honolulu
Nami Kaze is what happens when a longtime right-hand chef to Hawai‘i’s fine-dining luminaries finally opens a place of his own. Jason Peel’s dishes erupt with originality, folding in influences from his childhood on Kaua‘i (‘ulu tots, showered with tomme shavings, nest in a pool of his grandfather’s barbecue sauce) to his penchant for izakaya-style dining. Brunch features everything from honey walnut shrimp waffles to luxe sushi rolls, and dinners of small shared plates can wrap in a lemony lobster chawanmushi, cold-smoked local tomatoes draped on custardy tofu, and ethereally fluffy sweet-corn beignets dipped in curry salt and Kewpie.

Nami Kaze opened during the pandemic with a brunch service and expanded to a full-blown diner last year. A James Beard Culinary Awards semi-finalist, this modern izakaya and sushi bar is located at Pier 38 in Honolulu, serving up decadent brunches (honey walnut shrimp and waffles, anyone?) and snack-size dinner plates such as lobster chawanmushi (steamed egg custard) and Kona abalone. Like any good izakaya, there’s also a substantial sake menu to accompany your food, including sake on-tap for $10 USD.
