Parking is expensive and/or hard to find, and most restaurants are overpriced and not particularly interesting. However, there are a few hidden gems that are worth the trek, including Ed Kenney’s newest restaurant, Mahina and Sun’s, in the Surfjack Hotel. Looking for something to take to eat on the beach?

Mahina & Sun’s, the fourth eatery by Honolulu native and chef Ed Kenney, is all about highlighting local, organic ingredients by way of modernized, and perfectly executed, home-style island fare.

This buzzy eatery in The Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club manages to draw locals to Waikīkī on the regular (no easy feat) thanks in part to its cool, midcentury aesthetic peppered with nostalgic nods to 1960s Hawai‘i surf culture. To achieve the look, Honolulu design firm The Vanguard Theory tapped dozens of local artisans to create custom work for the space. Mixed in with the Hans Wegner wishbone chairs, you’ll find shaka-patterned wallpaper by Andrew Mau, sculptural hand-cut wood pendant lights from Mark Chai and upholstered seating featuring archival prints from fashion label Tori Richard.—BT

This casual yet trendy semi-outdoor restaurant inside the Surfjack Hotel in Waikiki has great vibes to go with its island influenced menu. We dined for brunch, which offered an eclectic menu of both brunch classics and unique items like our favorite dish, the pork adobo fried rice. It takes the Filipino pork dish and combines it with avocado, pickled mushrooms, kimchi, and pickled ginger topped with a perfectly cooked runny egg for a bowl you just can’t stop eating.

An easy stroll from most hotels on Waikiki’s main boulevard, Mahina & Sun’sis an oasis where you can savor flavorful dishes and drinks with a local touch. This place might not be on most people’s Oahu bucket list in terms of bars, but it’s a nice quiet space in the midst of bustling Waikiki where you can go for delicious bites and good cocktails. They have a huge interior seating area and an outside patio where you can enjoy live music.

You can get the best value for money by ordering Mahina’s Family Feast, a whole fried fish served with buttered breadfruit cucumber ume salad, and for dessert, a creamy banana pudding pavlova.

Local fish is the star at Ed Kenney’s latest restaurant (his others, Mud Hen Water and Town are also worth checking out). The sad truth is that in Waikiki, it’s hard to find good local seafood. Most of the stuff on menus, from shellfish to salmon, is imported.
