The proprietors are best known for their huge, ripe strawberries wrapped in a white mochi covering, which won't last as long as a box of chocolates—most mochi items are good for only two or three days. To guarantee you get your fill, call and place your order ahead of time.

Two Ladies Kitchen is a small shop located in downtown Hilo known for its handmade mochi (Japanese glutinous rice cake). The strawberry mochi—a fresh whole strawberry encased in sweet azuki beans and wrapped in soft handmade mochi—is the most popular item; you should pre-order these. Two Ladies Kitchen offers a variety of flavors, colors and shapes of mochi and a half-dozen varieties of manju (sweet Japanese pastry).

This place usually has a line out the door and operates with one person at the register and 1 – 2 people in the back, preparing. Their specialty is mochi (Japanese rice cake), stuffed with various fillings such as strawberries, shortcake, etc. They do use unnatural food dyes in their products, which is typically something we avoid, but because of their reputation, we had to try just two!

There’s always a line at Two Ladies Kitchen and for good reason: since 1993, owner Nora Uchida, along with her family, have been making the most delicious mochi in Hawaii. Pre-order to ensure favorite flavors are in stock that day or queue up and wait to see what’s left. Strawberry, adzuki bean, lilikoi and grape, and sweet potato are popular choices, but you really can’t go wrong.

Two Ladies Kitchen opens at 10 and already I’m the eighth person in line. Early birds are a mix of locals from other islands and foodie visitors from beyond. I’m soon to learn that Hilo natives know to phone in their orders up to a day before, which makes pickup time speedier—or they just skip the Saturday madness altogether.

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, make a beeline for Two Ladies Kitchen. This little mochi shop has built a cult following thanks to its soft, chewy treats stuffed with fresh fruit, azuki beans, or chocolate. The Strawberry Mochi is the standout here, featuring a whole, juicy strawberry wrapped in sweet mochi.

It’s mocha-in-the-making at Two Ladies Kitchen where the strawberry mocha is the absolute, hands-down favorite and often sells out. This Japanese delicacy features a fresh strawberry encased in hand-mashed sweet adzuki bean paste and pounded sticky rice—a great souvenir, if you can resist the temptation!

You will not find better or fresher mochi anywhere in Hawaii. If you do please tell us!. Don’t expect fast food at Two Ladies Kitchen – you will first stand in line and then they’ll take their time preparing your mochi to order which may take about half an hour.

They make fresh mochi daily with all kinds of Hawaiian fruit flavors. The flavors tend to rotate, but strawberry is their most popular flavor. If you are not sure what you want, I recommend getting one of the variety packs to try out a sampling of flavors.
