Reviews Summary

Puka Puka Kitchen is a highly-rated hidden gem in Hilo, praised for its exceptionally flavorful food, generous portions, and incredibly friendly service. Diners rave about the unique fusion of cuisines and the outstanding value for money. The primary drawback is the very limited seating, making takeout a common and recommended option.

Service was great.

Special $9
Veggie curry, nice variety of veg & flavor over rice
Special $23
Miso mahi over garlic rice and side salad. It was SO ONO!! They really do a great job, we will be back!"

"Locally owned amazing prices and portions are CHERRY!! Finally found a homey restaurant definitely coming back yesssai!!"

Jamie J.

"Tiny shop, big taste, HUGE serving size! I stopped by while on walkabout, ordered chicken katsu... expecting a basic plate lunch.

I was SURPRISED. The serving size was huge, with a salad and ?garlic? rice. Saffron? So much food. Either share a plate, expect take home, or ask for a small serving.

Service was very aloha friendly. Very little seating, expect to do takeout for a park, hotel, etc, or if you are lucky, a seat.

It looked popular with both locals and tourists.

Very tasty!"

For lower-key downtown Hilo, stop in at Puka Puka Kitchen (just a block down from Cafe Pesto). Their opening hours are super limited (11am-2:30pm) and the dining room is tiny but they just get everything right. The ahi don, chicken katsu, and garlic rice are especially good and everything is served with a mountain of fresh and colorful locally sourced salad lightly coated in a dressing that will knock your socks off.
