Hinterland itself isn’t off the beaten path, but some of the dishes on its adventurous menu may be uncharted territory for your taste buds. The chefs have made a conscious effort to embrace unusual food pairings while seeking out fresh, local ingredients to produce vibrant, unique dishes. Working closely with fishermen on the West and East Coasts and alongside farmers close to home, the culinary team is able to make elements like just caught fish and hand foraged mushrooms the stars of their dishes.

Bill Tressler opened Hinterland Brewing Company in 1995 and ushered a new wave of brewing into the city at the dawn of the craft brewing movement. The experience shows in a beer lineup of diverse flavors, from Door County Cherry Wheat made with local, tart Montmorency cherries to flagship varieties like Packerland Pilsner and the India Pale Ale simply named IPA. The operation moved from Downtown Green Bay in 2017 to a state-of-the-art facility serving as an anchor restaurant for Titletown, an active community development across the street from famed Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers.

When it comes to breakfast and lunch, cafes and diners were top choices (probably the largest category of restaurants singled out): Allouez Cafe, Blackstone Family Restaurant (for the experience one reader notes), Grapevine Cafe, Golden Basket Family Restaurant, Kavarna Coffeehouse, Luna Cafe (you can get the coffee behind Hinterland Brewing's Luna Stout here, but the granola is not to be overlooked), Nicolet Restaurant, Oak Street Cafe, Pasquale's International Cafe (along with White Dog Black Cat and Cafe Espresso offers a fun atmosphere) and The Village Grille.

Besides Krolls, Hinterland Brewery and Restaurant is the newest culinary addition to the area surrounding the stadium (called simply Titletown) where you can sample some of the best beer Green Bay has to offer. It’s a great spot to enjoy some local craft beer, fresh fish delivered daily from Honolulu, Seattle, and Portland, Maine, and a wide variety of culinary offerings everyone can enjoy. Swing through to watch a Packers game with fellow fans and enjoy their Home Game menu, or come after the game for some cold ones and their Home Game Late Night menu.

Wrap up your day with a meal at one of Green Bay's many landmark restaurants, from the four stages of chili at Chili John's that opened in 1913 to the anything-but-a-burger-and-a-beer Hinterland Brewery and Restaurant. Its upscale menu features marinated pheasant goat cheese pound cake, all enjoyed with the sounds of jazz drifting from the upstairs jazz bar. Kroll's (East or West) has been around since in the 1930s and is on the dining map for its broasted chicken.

Green Bay’s downtown Farmers Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays could also be the perfect option, and is really popular. If you go to the Wednesday Farmers Market, I suggest making a reservation at Three Three Five for a first date you won’t soon forget.

Hinterland Brewery and Restaurant, in Titletown, made the best fried cheese curds I have had in all my travels in Wisconsin and that is saying a lot!. They have a great selection of menu items, from nachos, to burgers, to salads and steak. Hinterland prides itself on connecting sustainable farms with diners.

Hinterland Brewery -- We would be completely remiss if we didn't include Hinterland Brewery as a Green Bay local beer favorite!. Hinterland is more of an upscale restaurnt and micro brewery. The local beers they offer sell around in some your other favorite Green Bay restaurants and bars too.
