Reviews Summary

Mr. Lyons Steakhouse is celebrated for its luxurious, retro ambiance and classic steakhouse fare, particularly the highly-praised Beef Wellington and expertly cooked steaks. Diners often compliment the attentive service and the sophisticated atmosphere. However, some have noted that the prices are high and service can be slow during peak times, with occasional inconsistencies in side dishes.

"We went very early for happy hour so that we insured we had a table for our group. The happy hour is fun, it’s pricey and there’s not much selection but what they do have there is delicious and the setting is so luxurious and fun. Our friends who arrived later had trouble getting in and getting a table and we’re put on a pretty long waitlist. There is a side bar called Seymour’s behind a curtain that was available to be seated in. That’s an equally beautiful space within this restaurant. It looks like there are multiple spaces to get your Palm Springs luxury on."

Heather A Adams

"You never want to leave a steakhouse feeling underwhelmed.

Here’s a quick recap:

We arrived 15 minutes early and found valet parking available. The atmosphere was swanky, but the ongoing wedding created a loud vibe that didn’t suit the steakhouse atmosphere and created a lot of in and out foot traffic. Although we had a reservation, they prioritized a couple for immediate seating, which was frustrating. None the less we were finally seated at, exactly 9 PM.

Once at our corner booth, a thoughtful gesture was the staff pulling the table out for easy access. After that, we waited too long for our waiter to take our order, but eventually, we got to discuss the menu and ordered drinks and appetizers. Our appetizers—creamed corn and whipped potatoes—disappointed, corn undercooked and potatoes not whipped and cold. However, the caviar and bone marrow were exceptional.

For dinner, we ordered the steak special, a veggie wellington, and a beef wellington. Here’s where it got messy: the kitchen delivered our meals without clearing the starters first, creating chaos with dirty plates and no new silverware. Despite this, the food was fantastic. The steak was perfectly cooked, and the Wellington was delicious, though on the veggie wellington we'd prefer beet greens over chard for a sweeter flavor inside that devine crust.

Afterward, they boxed our leftovers quickly, but it would have been better to receive them with the check, due to the table size and still ordering dinner. For dessert, we had date pudding and a frozen Meyer lemon dessert, both outstanding and a perfect end to the meal, especially with the desert wines.

The elegant experience we had upon arrival was lost as we had to move our own table to leave, complete oversight by the management team. Overall, I’d rate this a solid 4 stars. While there were a few issues, the experience often hit the mark, leaving me curious to try another Palm Springs location or just maybe Mr. Lyons can nail it?"

Jeremy Cullen

"A classic Steakhouse, excellent and menu educated servers set up a wonderful dinner. The food was served quickly, properly seasoned and hot. Tables are spaced apart enough where sounds are there but quiet conversation can be had. The prices are high but the quality of food and service make the sting not so bad. Indulge yourself."

The 25 Best Restaurants & Bars In Palm Springs - Los Angeles

Less of a nostalgic throwback as it is a perfectly preserved relic, Mr. Lyons has been around in some form or another since the 1940s. But after a massive renovation in 2015, this historic steakhouse has retaken its place as the desert’s go-to spot for breaking out your best pearls, sipping martinis like they’re tap water, and going to town on giant slabs of meat. With multiple dining rooms, a lounge/bar area, a wrap-around patio, and a private dining space, Mr. Lyons is sneakily quite large, making it a great option if you’re in town with a bunch of people who are in the mood to celebrate.

Seventy-five years in and this swanky spot is still at the top of the city’s food chain. Despite a few modern touches to the 1945 original, Mr. Lyons feels like the classy steakhouses of yore—one that wined and dined long-ago locals like Frank Sinatra and Bob Hope and frequent visitors like Marilyn Monroe. Today, it still boasts the classics (think steak frites, prime rib, mac and cheese, shrimp cocktails, and wedge salads) while its new chef, Shad Newton, offers a lighter touch with vegetable-forward options like vegan chopped salad and honey nut squash.

Seymour’s is a cool bar and lounge in the back of the also-cool Mr. Lyons Steakhouse. We’ve come to love the bar (usually with a pianist) at the newly revived and stylish rat-pack-era Melvyn’s; it’s great for a snazzy cocktail (and a fancy, expensive dinner - see below). There are a number of bars at the glam Parker Palm Springs Hotel: the tiny, mirrored Mini-Bar in the lobby, Counter Reformation wine bar out back off of the outdoor courtyard, and one of our favorites, the small but swanky bar at mister parker’s (see below in restaurants).

Put it out of your head that this used to be Lyons English Grille -- a restaurant that featured mini suits of armor and an entryway that resembled the turret of a castle. The new Mr. Lyons is a mellow, velvet-bedecked steakhouse serving up dishes like filet mignon with a side of blistered haricot vert, alongside a host of impeccably faithful classic cocktails. Think of this place as the ultimate symbol of Palm Springs then and now -- a kitschy dive transformed into a modern beauty that still respects and pays homage to the past.

Situated in the former Lyons English Grille building, Mr. Lyons sports a design (imagine velvet banquettes, marble flooring, and a speakeasy den called Seymour’s) recalling the past, but the cuisine nods to now with carrot-fed filet mignon, local date steak sauce, and Coachella Valley corn. Though it’s a terrific spot for special occasions, the lounge’s daily happy hour makes it easy to indulge at wallet-friendly prices. 233 E Palm Canyon Dr; mrlyonsps.com

* Mr. Lyons (http://www.mrlyonsps.com. 233 East Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs CA 92264). Prices are high for Palm Springs (the bar menu in the lounge is more reasonable than the dining room menu), but the food is consistently good, the service is top notch, and the lovely old school lounge setting feels both classic Palm Springs yet modern at the same time. Definitely one of the top dining/drinking destinations in all of Palm Springs.
