Less of a nostalgic throwback as it is a perfectly preserved relic, Mr. Lyons has been around in some form or another since the 1940s. But after a massive renovation in 2015, this historic steakhouse has retaken its place as the desert’s go-to spot for breaking out your best pearls, sipping martinis like they’re tap water, and going to town on giant slabs of meat. With multiple dining rooms, a lounge/bar area, a wrap-around patio, and a private dining space, Mr. Lyons is sneakily quite large, making it a great option if you’re in town with a bunch of people who are in the mood to celebrate.

Seventy-five years in and this swanky spot is still at the top of the city’s food chain. Despite a few modern touches to the 1945 original, Mr. Lyons feels like the classy steakhouses of yore—one that wined and dined long-ago locals like Frank Sinatra and Bob Hope and frequent visitors like Marilyn Monroe. Today, it still boasts the classics (think steak frites, prime rib, mac and cheese, shrimp cocktails, and wedge salads) while its new chef, Shad Newton, offers a lighter touch with vegetable-forward options like vegan chopped salad and honey nut squash.

When dinnertime rolls around, get gussied up and head to Mr. Lyon’s steakhouse for rib eyes and martinis. And don’t forget to pick up some BBQ and fried chicken for the road at Brown’s BBQ. Much as we all love In-N-Out, you probably already had your drive-through moment on the way in, anyway.

Seymour’s is a cool bar and lounge in the back of the also-cool Mr. Lyons Steakhouse. We’ve come to love the bar (usually with a pianist) at the newly revived and stylish rat-pack-era Melvyn’s; it’s great for a snazzy cocktail (and a fancy, expensive dinner - see below). There are a number of bars at the glam Parker Palm Springs Hotel: the tiny, mirrored Mini-Bar in the lobby, Counter Reformation wine bar out back off of the outdoor courtyard, and one of our favorites, the small but swanky bar at mister parker’s (see below in restaurants).

Put it out of your head that this used to be Lyons English Grille -- a restaurant that featured mini suits of armor and an entryway that resembled the turret of a castle. The new Mr. Lyons is a mellow, velvet-bedecked steakhouse serving up dishes like filet mignon with a side of blistered haricot vert, alongside a host of impeccably faithful classic cocktails. Mr. Lyons is definitely a place to see and be seen, and fortunately, it’s always a wonderful meal. It’s a great spot for big groups, but it’s just as great for two too!

When we headed for a 3 course food and wine pairing at the newly launched Mr. Lyons Steakhouse, I knew we were in for a treat. The latest opening from Palm Springs power couple, Tara Lazar and Marco Rossetti, Mr. Lyons serves an array of menu items and extensive wine and cocktails in addition to their fine cuts of beef and meats.

If you’re in the mood for a swanky steakhouse experience in a glamorous retro dining room, Mr. Lyons is the place.
