Who would have thought you’d come to Michigan to get a taste of Scandinavian?. I definitely didn’t, but Søvengard in Grand Rapids’ West Side is here to change minds. The restaurant itself is clean, bright, and sleek just like you’d expect a Scandinavian experience to provide.

Our first dinner in Grand Rapids was one of my favorite meals there. This restaurant in downtown Grand Rapids is in the Westside neighborhood and is part of Søvengard. Søvengard is home to an indoor/outdoor Biergarten and also, the restaurant, Høst.

New restaurants like Myrth in Ada, helmed by a James Beard Award winner, will help further the expectations and offerings. The influx of Grand Rapids residents coming from larger markets will only continue to fuel the expanding culinary options.

I really love how fresh all the dishes are at The Sovengard. They always have great seasonal vegetables and amazing vegetarian dishes on the menu. Also, they are now open for lunch and recently expanded their space!

The Sovengard is a relaxed, polished eatery offering seasonal, locally-sourced farm-to-table Scandinavian-inspired plates, plus a full bar with craft cocktails and draft beer.

The Sovengard: A lovely beer garden style restaurant with an adorable interior and killer outdoor space. We absolutely loved this spot and I highly recommend checking it out!

Speaking of bar hopping, my fifth recommendation is to grab a cocktail (or bite to eat or both) at Sovengard located directly across the street from Butcher’s Union.

This is a hidden gem with a nordic name but purely local ingredients. The menu changes depending on the season. Make sure to try one of their craft cocktails.

Brick Road for pizza, Mitten brewing company for beer and pizza/impossible burger, the sovengard for a nice date night, and Stella's for late nighr/bar food!
