As casual as other restaurants in G-Town can be, there are still places like Sugar & Rye, a bougie brunch and dinner spot with a few Cajun-Creole twists. With dressy foliage wallpaper and golden light fixtures, Sugar & Rye can be the ideal brunch destination if you have a pastel shirt that you’ve been dying to wear. Menu items like smoky shrimp and grits loaded with andouille sausage and spicy pepper jack cheese, biscuits and gravy, and a mimosa that is 99% champagne, help make up a classic Southern-style brunch at Sugar & Rye.

This bistro is among some of the Strand’s newer openings, and has only been open for a couple of years, but it has quickly garnered a loyal fanbase for its Palm Springs-centric interiors and Cajun-inspired cuisine. Guests clad in Panama hats and Hawaiian shirts sip on tiki drinks while indulging in brunch dishes like shrimp and grits and lemon blueberry pancakes. The dinner menu opens with a number of delicious salads, but diners can splurge on more decadent dishes like the S&R burger, which is built with a beef brisket and short rib blend patty, and topped with pimento cheese, fried green tomatoes, bacon onion jam, and shredded lettuce.

The stylish dining room will lure you inside, but the charming patio will pull you back out at Church Street restaurant Sugar & Rye. Expertly mixed cocktails pair with Cajun and Southern-inspired coastal cuisine, like shrimp and grits, jambalaya risotto, and cornmeal-crusted flounder. Plan for a wait if you go during brunch; thankfully, the lemon-blueberry pancakes, salsa-verde burrito, and honey-lavender espresso martini are worth the winding queue.

When you step inside, you’ll be greeted by a vibrant atmosphere that’s both inviting and playful. The menu offers a delightful mix of kid-friendly options, from fluffy pancakes to scrumptious sandwiches, ensuring there's something to please even the pickiest eaters. I loved watching the little ones beam with joy as they devoured their colorful desserts—each a work of art!

Sugar and Rye is a contemporary and stylish spot downtown known for its cocktail bar and brunch. Newly opened in 2022, dinner here is all about the seafood. With dishes like char-grilled shrimp and mango seafood ceviche to Southern-inspired mains like shrimp and grits and cornmeal-crusted catfish, there's something for every seafood lover in your group to dig into.

Hit fresh-faced Strand District haunt Sugar & Rye to sip $3 select cans of beer; $5 rum; $6 chardonnay, cabernet, and prosecco; and $7 cocktails from Moscow Mules and Espresso Martinis to Spiked Lemonade. While there, nosh on $6 and up bites like truffle fries, Texas sheet cake, and fried green tomatoes. Sunday through Thursday 4pm to 6pm.

At Sugar & Rye you can order your mimosa with your choice of champagne, prosecco, or non-alcoholic sparkling wine with such unique options as freshly squeezed juice of blackberry and a garnish of mint, with grapefruit juice and a fresh sprig of rosemary, or with pineapple juice fresh squeezed in-house

If you’re looking for a contemporary take on classic American dishes, I have a suggestion. Sugar & Rye offers a stylish and welcoming atmosphere. Whether it’s for happy hour or brunch favorites like their avocado toast and breakfast burrito, it’s one of the great cheap restaurants Galveston TX have.

For breakfast we found Sugar and Rye, which had only been open a few months, just down the road from our cute-as-a-button accommodation. I had to try the fried green tomatoes and corn bread!

Sugar & Rye Coastal Kitchen & Cocktail Bar can be found near the historic Strand District and serves coastal-inspired dished and creative and delicious craft cocktails.

Sugar & Rye is a nice, fairly new restaurant near the Strand. I also recommend Hearsay on the Strand, another new place.
