The perfect place to mangia for anyone who loves rustic, authentic Italian food, with a range of pizzas, pastas, salads, and entrees that taste like they come directly out of nonna’s kitchen. The atmosphere is lively, the decor is understated but elegant, and you will want to dine there more than once—it’s that good. From the Oro Bianco buffalo mozzarella appetizer with marinated heirloom tomatoes, focaccia crostini, aged balsamic, basil, and Texas olive oil to prosciutto and arugula pizza, proceed to the hearty Lasagna Alla Campagna, with bolognese sauce, if you have room, and top it off with delectable tiramisu.

(It was settled by German immigrants in 1846 and named after Prince Frederick of Prussia.) The couple has since opened several more popular Fredericksburg restaurants, including the new farm-to-table Italian spot Alla Campagna.

One of the newest restaurants on this list comes from John Washburne, one of the strongest players in Fredericksburg. In addition to Alla Campagna, his Side Street Hospitality group is responsible for Otto’s German Bistro, Caliche Coffee Bar, August E’s and more. Washburne opened Alla Campagna last summer, decorated like the country home of an eccentric doyenne, with a team led by Side Street culinary director Adam Yoho dedicated to making pasta by hand, baking pizza in a tiled dome oven and cultivating a strong list of Italian wines.

Our final dinner found us at Alla Campagna, an Italian ristorante launched in 2023 and the latest endeavor by John and Evelyn Washburne. If you’ve dined in Fredericksburg at August E’s, La Bergerie or Otto’s German Bistro, then you’ve already tasted their handiwork (they also own Tubby’s Ice House, Caliche Coffee Bar & Roastery, and Hoffman Haus B&B). Evelyn somehow found time to chat up our table between running six restaurants, raising three daughters and teaching a 6 a.m.

Alla Campagna (342 W. Main Street), one of the newest reservation-worthy restaurants on the culinary scene, transports diners to Europe with cuisine characteristic of Italy led by Chef Adrian Cruz. Guests who reserve a patio table can savor antipasti plates with a glass of sparkling wine surrounded by Tuscan-like stone walls and the sound of a hand-chiseled water fountain. Diners can expect hearty portions of homemade pasta served under bolognese, gremolata, or ragu.

It’s called Alla Campagna, a couple of blocks off the ‘main drag,’ so to speak. This little Italian Bistro sits on the corner at 342 W. Main in an old limestone building.
