If you grew up in Broward, or like me, have lived there for a good part of your life, a trip back to town has to include LaSpada’s. What’s special at this place begins with an acrobatic toss where one sandwich maker sends cold cuts and cheeses in a giant arc to somebody down the line, where they use the meats and cheese to form a blanket that tucks in the rest of the ingredients into a tidy sub. The Italian is ever-popular, but my standard order is a Mama’s—turkey and Genoa salami with lots of sweet and hot peppers tucked into bed under that glorious meat pocket.

Coined the “best damn hoagie in town,” this spot is home to hearty sandwiches and South Florida’s famous #meatblanket, an extra layer of meat tacked on top of the assembly to keep the heaping pile of toppings secure. Opt for the Monster, made with turkey, ham, and roast beef. There’s often a line, but—trust—it’s worth it.

While Miami’s Italian sandwich scene has gotten better, Broward is still the place to go for huge subs stuffed with cold cuts. For our money, Laspada’s makes the best Italian subs in South Florida. They have a few locations, but our favorite is in Broward’s most hyphenated town, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea.
