Purchasing beans direct from farmers, Macy’s roasts and grinds them on-site providing fresh and flavourful cups of java to locals and tourists alike.

For the ultimate in people-watching, Macy’s takes the cake… and the apple pie croissant, French cinnamon rolls and vegan banana bread. Order the popular Macys Special, a latte made with hot chocolate, and park it on the busy Beaver Street patio or inside the buzzy interior to watch as a near-constant stream of students, skiers and locals visit the cafe. A Flagstaff fixture since 1979, Macy’s also gets props for the best coffee shop food menu in town, with house-made granola, Belgian-style waffles, biscuits and gravy, stacked sandwiches on house-made bread and vegan options that aren’t afterthoughts.

If Hollywood fairytale screenwriters had to design an enchanted coffee shop on mainstreet, it’d probably look something like Macy’s European Coffeehouse and Bakery. This cozy little cafe, beloved for epitomizing vintage charm, has been a Flagstaff hallmark for over 40 years now. Their longevity is notable in regards to being an independently-owned small business, but especially when considering they exclusively serve vegetarian fare, which must be an indication as to how tasty the food actually is!

Locals argue this Flagstaff coffeehouse should be on the National Register of Historic Places because it has been a favorite for more than 30 years. While coffee takes center stage, the menu also earns high praise for its simplicity and flexibility, offering most items in gluten-free or vegan options. Yogurt, granola, oatmeal, waffles, steamed eggs, a breakfast sandwich, and biscuits and gravy round out the breakfast menu, with salads and sandwiches available for lunch.

Native Californian Tim Macy opened his European coffeehouse in downtown Flagstaff in 1980. Macy's was the first commercial coffee roaster in Arizona. And in addition to all the java, including their tasty Macy's special with some cocoa in the mix, you'll find a variety of classic baked goods, such as pies, tarts, layer cakes, cheesecakes, brownies and cookies, and an all-vegetarian menu with an assortment of wheat-free, dairy-free and vegan options.

Although Macy’s is one of the most popular and well known hotspots within the city, both for the coffee and food, I find it to be overrated. After multiple visits during various times of the year, I can attest that the setting is just too cramped and noisy (all the time!) to enjoy the food and drinks. I would never recommend getting a cup of coffee or breakfast here (both are sub par), although the lunch entrees are pretty tasty.

Macy’s is arguably the best-known Flagstaff coffee establishment, with lots of unique history. The Macy’s special (a hot-chocolate-meets-coffee concoction that is pure love) kept me going through grad school, and their grilled cheese sustained me through pregnancies. They are also a vegetarian café with plenty of patio seating.

Established in 1980, Macy’s European Coffee House and Bakery on South Beaver Street is a cute place with lovely art and an old-school atmosphere. They have plenty of outdoor seating and a to-go window on the sidewalk for when you’re in a hurry. Their coffee is sourced directly from the farmers and fresh roasted in-house daily.

Flagstaff’s charming Historic Downtown has several local cafes where you can enjoy a delicious hot or cold beverage. The first coffee spot we were introduced to was Macy’s European Coffeehouse on Beaver Street. This local’s favorite also serves a variety of breakfast and lunch favorites including vegetarian options.

One of Flagstaff’s most prominent historic hotels (it opened in 1897), The Weatherford has a prime location in downtown that makes it easy to walk to many of the city’s restaurants, bars and shops. The Weatherford’s 17 rooms are individually appointed. Expect historic decor like antique furniture and clawfoot tubs.

No matter the season, I always start my day at Macy’s European Coffeehouse & Bakery and Biff’s Bagels, right across the street.

Beaver St., this a casual spot for coffee and bakery items along with a breakfast and lunch menu. I recommend the scones!

Macy’s (14 S. Beaver Street) is extremely popular and cool and the coffee is good, though you’ll stand in line for ages.
